This is a beautifully illustrated copy of "The World's Show" by Henry Mayhew. "1851: or, The Adventures of Mr. and Mrs. Sandboys and Family, Who Came up to London to 'Enjoy Themselves,' and to See the Great Exhibition." Published in 1851 (though undated) by David Bogue in London; 1st edition in book form following the serialized edition. The book features wonderful illustrations (many are fold-outs or 2-page spreads) by GEORGE CRUIKSHANK. Handsome, custom-bound copy with three-quarter leather, gilt lettering on the spine with raised bands, and marbled end papers. The book is a fantastic example of Cruikshank's work.Condition:Some very light soiling at the top of the front cover; clean back cover and spine; sharp corners; bright gilt lettering on the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. The pages are in overall very good condition - mostly clean with only a few random, light stains/ink smudges found; no writing found. With the bookplate of Sir George Chetwynd, 2nd Baronet, on the front board and the front pastedown endpaper and the small, gilt bookplate of Alexander McGrigor on the front free endpaper. Also with the small blind stamp of Crendon Hall on the title page and first page. In his book "On Poisons, in Relation to Medical Jurisprudence and Medicine" (Lea & Blanchard, Philadelphia, 1848), Doctor Alfred Swaine Taylor states: "The great value of chemical evidence in otherwise doubtful cases of poisoning, was never more strongly shown than at the trial of Mary Ann Burdock at Bristol, in 1835... The body of the deceased had been buried fourteen months: it was exhumed, and the poison discovered in the stomach and viscera." Wear to extremities, two tears to cloth (to lower edge of volume two and three), some annotations in pencil on the margins, small note affixed to the front pastedown endpaper of volume one (with an explanation in Italian on how to clean old prints). ; Octavo.

Revised and enlarged. viii, 536, 8, [21]pp. Contemporary full tree calf, red leather label lettered in gold on the spine. Marbled endpapers. According to the author, almost eighty pages of additions and two extra copper plates were included in this edition. With three engraved plates (one foldout), and tables. Includes chapters on grain rotations, beans, maize and wheat culture, farm-yard manure, barns, cattle stalls, cattle pastured and soiled, observations on cattle, sheep, and hogs, fences, butter, rice, potato spirit and beer, thoughts on hired labourers, and more. Also includes an interesting recipe for Parmesan (Parmigiano) or Lodian cheese. Wear to extremities, several wormholes throughout (usually minor), plates I and II were excised, tear to plate V, some scattered soiling, owner's inscription on title. A fair copy. Uncommon. Green cloth, gilt lettering and decoration. frontispiece portrait of author, illustrations by John Tenniel. Text is in Japanese with English translation on opposite pages. Book is in very good very lightly used condition, text is mildly age-toned, former owner's bookplate on front pastedown, bookseller's ticket on rear pastedown. Original dust jacket has 1-1 1/2 inch chips from head and tail, (slight loss of text), and light chipping along folds. A rare copy of an early c1930s Japanese imprint.
