Royal provenance, incl. manuscript dedication poem to 'Sire'.
A beautifully bound 2 volume set, containing an unique collection of 18 theatrical plays by the author Desfontaines, all with their original title-pages, dating from 1776 to 1809, from the library of Princess Sophie of Bavaria (1805-1872), stamped with her crowned initials in both volumes. Paris, P. Robert-Christophe Ballard 'par exprès Commandement de Sa Majesté', a.o., 1767-1809. 2 Vols. with 18 plays, with their original titles. 8vo. ca. 14 x 20.5 cm. The signed manuscript poem by the author on the first blank paper in the first volume. Contemporary tree-marbled calf, covers with fine gilt fillet, backs gilt decorated, sides gilt, red and green title-labels, small paper labels on bottom of spine, with Princess Sophie of Bavaria's crowned initials in both volumes stamped on verso of the first title.
The author François-Georges Fouques Deshayes (1733-1824), known as 'Desfontaines', was a French playwright, novelist, and librettist. Whilst working as a librarian and a royal censor, he wrote a vast number of works for stage. The at one time owner of this set, Sophie of Bavaria, was the mother of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico. She was known to be very close to Napoleon II (1811-1832), who lived in exile at the Austrian Court as 'Franz', Duke of Reichstadt. His mother Marie Louise of Austria (1791-1847), 2nd wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, and for 4 years Empress of the French and Queen of Italy, was a sister in law of Sophie. Since the last play is dated 1809, the date of the Napoleon Marie Louise's marriage in 1810, Napoleon's abdication in 1814 and his wife and sons subsequent exile to a then (again) French hostile Austrian court, makes a dedication to 'Sire', being Napoleon Bonaparte, plausible.
Present are: L'Aveugle de Palmyre. (1767); L'Amour et la Folie. (1782); Le Droit du Seigneur. (1784); L'Amant statue. (1785); La dot. (1785); Le divorce. (1793); Arlequin afficheur.

4 pp. Cambridge, Apr. 29, 1880. 12mo. Neatly written letter from Longfellow to Charles Kent (1823-1902), well-known English poet, biographer and journalist, concerning a book written by Kent ("Corona Catholica), and others sent to Longfellow for which Kent had never heard back concerning Longfellow's receipt of the books. He writes: "My Dear Mr. Kent, I hasten wit all speed to thank you for your kind letter and for the "Corona Catholica," both of which reached me safely and are very welcome. But I am troubled by what you say of the other books sent so long ago, your collected Poems, and "Charles Dickens as Reader." They were both received and I wrote to you at the time a letter full of thanks, particularly for the Poems and among the Poems, more particularly for the beautiful lines addressed to me, which I always deeply feel." He goes on to say that he is truly grieved that his letter never reached Kent, with the only consolation being this letter. He also thanks Kent for the "Corona" but states that…

Three pages, 1949. A sprawling, witty and provocative letter written by Pound early on during his extended stay at St. Elizabeth's hospital (12 years, from 1948-1859) to Helen Rossetti Angeli, the daughter of famed Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood co-founder William Michael Rossetti. Written in pencil on the full opened face, with two notes perhaps by HAR, and then on both flaps on the verso, with two wrap-around portions also possibly by HA Rossetti. [FORE-EDGE PAINTING]. NORDHOFF, Charles (1878-1947). -- HALL, James Norman (1887-1951). Mutiny on the Bounty. Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1932. 8vo. 20th-century blue crushed levant gilt, upper cover with central illustration of a ship in white, red and green morocco on-lay, edges gilt, concealing a FORE-EDGE PAINTING of the H.M.S. Bounty and a ship of mutineers at sea; quarter morocco gilt slipcase.
FIRST EDITION of the first work in the Bounty Trilogy, based on the 1787 mutiny in Tahiti. Throughout history, few voyages are as infamous as that of the bounty. Even before the doomed sailing, the naval exploits of Lieutenant William Bligh and his participation in the third and final voyage of Captain James Cook, were quickly becoming legend. Sailing with such a distinguished officer should have been an honour but this was not the case.
On April 28th, 1789, the HMS Bounty was taken over by disgruntled crew members, led by acting Lieutenant Fletcher Christian. The mutiny came on the heels of… Leer más

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons / The Knickerbocker Press, 1927. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Corners a bit rubbed, boards faintly soiled, ink date and owner bookplate of Robert N. Cherry on front flyleaf. 1927 Half-Leather. iv, 325 pp. 8vo. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.
