If you want to learn about Europe leading up to the Great War, this book will provide an excellent starting point. It is well written and thorough, typical Massie. The author does an excellent job of bringing to life the major British and German figures and their interconnection.
If you you care to round out the period, add "The Proud Tower" and "The Guns of August" by Barbara Tuchman and you will be well informed about a period seldom seen in a US public school classroom.
