Very short closed tear at right margin; small piece of tape on reverse. Uncommon Civil War map showing the Battle of Port Royal. Publisher unknown, but probably contemporary. The Battle of Port Royal was one of the earliest amphibious operations of the American Civil War, in which a United States Navy fleet and United States Army expeditionary force captured Port Royal Sound, South Carolina, between Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina, on November 7, 1861. The sound was guarded by two forts on opposite sides of the entrance, Fort Walker on Hilton Head Island to the south and Fort Beauregard on Phillip's Island to the north.

1907 First edition, volume one (all published). The author served as a junior officer under McCulloch, Ross, and Nathan Bedford Forrest. Howes J-152. Nevins II, p. 225. Jenkins Basic Texas Books 110: "One of the most useful biographical compilations relating to Texans who served in the Confederacy . includes biographies of 384 participants in the Civil War, as well as 66 personal anecdotes of war service."

Charleston, SC: Babcock & Co., 1845. SCARCE Confederate States of Americas Association Copy, bearing the small bookplate and 2 signatures of William Cabell Rives (May 4, 1793 - April 25, 1868), a member of the First Families of Virginia who served in the U.S. House and Senate and two separate terms as U.S. Minister to France. He later served in the Provisional Confederate Congress from 1861 to 1862 and the Second Confederate Congress from 1864 to 1865. Very Good, professionally rebacked with spine laid over with some loss of gilt decorations and gilt lettering dulled, prior owner bookplate and inscriptions front and rear end pages, tipped in photograph of a George Washington statue at rear end pages, some marginal pencil notations by the latter owner, and an extended biographical manuscript inscription about Rives, taken from p. 37 of "The Plantation South", at 2nd. front end page. 1874 1ed Confederate General Joseph E Johnston Civil War Narrative CSA Military
Joseph E. Johnston was a 19th-century American Army officer who served as a Confederate States Army general, even though he trained at West Point. However, his military acumen was wrecked and constantly criticized by Confederate President Jefferson Davis – with whom Johnston was very displeased. Following his service time as a military officer, Johnston wrote and published his own memoirs – memoirs which were mostly attacks on President Davis and other officers, as well as defending his own actions and decisions during the Civil War.

'In Tall Cotton' says of this work:
"A vigorous defense of his own actions and necessarily, therefore, a hard-hitting attack on others, particularly on President Davis against whom he records his objections to excess."

According to Nevins, this work is
"one of the earliest Confederate reminiscences; strongly partisan, anti-Davis, and defensive in tone."
