Spine volume numbers stamped in blind, as are the spine and board border fillets. Volume 1 has a pull at the spine's crown, with a loss, and a small area on the front board where the leather has peeled partial away. Volume two was protected by an old, handmade coarse paper jacket, which deteriorated, but served its purpose admirably. Scattered foxing throughout both volumes. Both hinges and joints remain strong. An attractive set. OCLC locates just one set, at the Nationale Biliotheque, with other institutions holding either volume 1, or volume 2. Full black morocco with multi colour design of two boxed lines in brown morocco across both boards and the spine, with tan, green and red design within each box. The spine is also lettered in gilt. Wood effect endpapers. All edges gilt. Housed in a felt lines chemise with the same wood effect paper on the boards and a black morocco spine, lettered in gilt and with one of the red designs onlaid between the title and authors. Bound in fine hardcover alum tawed pigskin. Beautifully bound in alum tawed pigskin over beveled wooden boards, elaborately blindestamped, with some hardware (clasp) still present, an excellent specimen of this style of binding and with a unique centerpiece stamp—an arrow up and an arrow down, with a bridge between the two incorporating a cross (representing Jesus coming to earth, dying on the cross, and rising again). A very similar ancient symbol can be found on Pictish rock carvings in Scotland (see the Elgin Cathedral Church Pictish stones).Josephus was a 1st century Jewish-Roman historian, who mentions Jesus in his writing, providing a 1st century non-Christian reference to the man Jesus Christ. 8vo. 20th-century blue crushed levant gilt, upper cover with central illustration of a ship in white, red and green morocco on-lay, edges gilt, concealing a FORE-EDGE PAINTING of the H.M.S. Bounty and a ship of mutineers at sea; quarter morocco gilt slipcase.
FIRST EDITION of the first work in the Bounty Trilogy, based on the 1787 mutiny in Tahiti. Throughout history, few voyages are as infamous as that of the bounty. Even before the doomed sailing, the naval exploits of Lieutenant William Bligh and his participation in the third and final voyage of Captain James Cook, were quickly becoming legend. Sailing with such a distinguished officer should have been an honour but this was not the case.
