1847 1st ed FLOWERS Personified Grandville Botany Herbal Illustrated Fleurs 2v

Jean Ignace Grandville was one of the most famous French caricaturists from 19th-century France. His style was formed after scenes of humor in which he regularly embodied men with the faces of animals and plants. His work "Les fleurs animées" is often considered his greatest work – a series of satirical illustrated flowers with human features.

This 1849 American edition of Grandville's masterpiece was translated by N. Cleaveland under the title "Flowers Personified". According to Bennett, this work is

"the most elaborate book of its kind from the gift book era"

A rare 16th-century printing of works of John Chrysostom. Chrysostom was one of the most important Early Christian Church authors and preachers and is most remembered for his sermons and homilies. He preached on many different subjects, but his most frequented topic was helping the needy. Chrysostom calls for followers of Jesus to set aside their material desires to help the poor, often in a way that shamed the rich and guilted them in to giving.
"Do you pay such honor to your excrements as to receive them into a silver chamber-pot when another man made in the image of God is perishing in the cold?" (Chrysostom in Liebeschuetz)

One of his most important treatises was 'On the Priesthood' in which he describes his experiences becoming a priest and living as a priest. Interestingly, this work was popular during his lifetime as he made references to it in his other works.

From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
