Complete eight-volume set, each volume bound in half-leather with marbled boards borded in gilt, banded spines with gilt titles and decoration, gilded head edges, marbled endpapers. Pages clean save for mild toning in the margins throughout, a small and faintly inky water stain at the lower bound corners of Volume III, mild rippling along the head edges in Volume V, and small water stains at the heel edges of three other volumes; all bindings remain square and tight, the leather somewhat darkened about the spine heel on five volumes and worn with occasional spots of exposure at the free corners, more gently rubbed at spine ends, with the occasional nick or scratch along the spine and occasional, mild flaking along front hinges, the marbled boards showing chipping at head and heel edges and surface scuffs on the back of Volume VIII and on the front of Volume VI, otherwise lovely. xix + 625, xvi + 699, xii + 591, xv + 606, xvi + 602,… Leer más

Fifteen late 19th century volumes of opera scores for piano by renowned composers including Mozart, Bellini, Donizetti and Verdi. This collection was the property of W. G. Moehring, likely of the famed Moehring musical family, who commissioned these custom fine bindings in stamped leather. Penciled musical notations indicate that the owner was undoubtedly a musician. Five raised bands and six compartments on each spine with the composer and the name of the opera in gilt letters. The name "W. G. Moehring" is gilt stamped on each cover in Gothic lettering. All edges are beautifully gilt. Various bookseller's stamps mostly from Philadelphia. Various publishers including Chabal (Paris), Gambogi Freres-editors de musique (Paris). An exceptionally nice set. Though all the volumes appear to have been rebacked at an early date and beautifully executed. (It would not have been noticeable except; the marbled endpapers did not match the marbled edges). A beautiful set, bound in full polished calf, spines flat, maroon and brown spine labels gilt, gilt ruled compartments decoratively stamped in gilt, all edges marbled, remarkably fresh and bright internally, with a few bumped corners. A lovely set.

1859 Japanese Samurai Lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi Tokugawa Osaka Castle Illustrated

A rare, 19th century Japanese woodblock print of "Taikouki". Taikouki is a biography describing the life of Taihe Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a Japanese samurai and daimyo (lord) considered the second "Great Unifier" of Japan following Nobunaga and preceding the Tokugawa Shogunate. Hideyoshi left a legacy including Osaka Castle, the Tokugawa class systems, the restriction of weapons, and the construction and restoration of many temples some of which are still visible in Kyoto. This book is a classic Edo era picture book describing and illustrating Toyotomi Hideyoshi's life illustrated by Utagawa Kuniyoshi! The woodblock prints began being made in 1855 and were completed in 1884. The images and text focus primarily on the military with detailed accuracy on armor, weapons, family crests, interiors, and more!
