A very nice copy with just the slightest of occasional brownspotting. Housed in a very nice custom-made black full morocco box with gilt llettering to spine. XII, 784 pp. Scarce first edition of Marx' immensely influential main work, arguably the greatest revolutionary work of the nineteenth century. With its attack on capitalists and capitalist mode of production, this cornerstone of 19th century thought came to determine the trajectory of economics and politics of the Western world. Marx' groundbreaking "Das Kapital" originally appeared in German in 1867, and only the first part of the work appeared in Marx' lifetime. PMM 358.

German calligraphic manuscript on vellum, richly decorated with colourful ornaments in upper, right and left margins. Berlin 1761. German manuscript on vellum, dated Berlin, 29 November 1761. With beautifully coloured ornamental decorations in right and left margins; with a crown above "FR" (for Fridericus Rex) at the centre of top margin framed by further hand coloured ornamental decorations. Signed by the master Christian Friederich Herr as well as by the guild elders Samuel Rhau and Johann Jacob Gillet. Oblong folio (353 x 610 mm). Traces of folds. An incision at the lower margin indicates that a seal was once present. The document was issued for August Friederich Nicolai from Brandenburg, who had been apprenticed to Christian Friederich Herr for six years since Christmas 1755 and now becoming a member of the Berlin guild of merchants for exotic spices and other exotic foodstuffs. From the early days of delicatessen shops in Berlin!

The copyright history is interesting. 2 were granted in 1886, 2 in 1889, 2 in 1898, 1 in 1899 and the last to the Century Company in 1900. On the cover page, the date shown by Doubleday, Page is 1906. I am not quite sure what a first edition would be.This is a very good copy for its age. There is a previous owners faded stamp on the inside left cover and there is a faint crease on the inside right cover page. Other flaws in the book are some pencil notes and marginal lines that are unobtrusive on pages 4,5,6,8,13,17,18,75. The pencil notes could be easily erased if the owner is so inclined.On page 93 are 2 tears apparently made when trying to separate uncut page 93-94.
