The first series of drawings and photographs of fine examples of architectural details. 10" x 13". Ivory cloth boards with red title label with gilt stamped lettering. Internals clean and fox-free. Previous owners' inscriptions on the flyleaf and the title page. Some light soiling and wear to covers and a lttle bumping of corners. Binding is tight and hinges sound.

A very good copy with excellent provenance - signed and inscribed by the author Luc Haesaerts and dedicated to Madame Lyle. Haesaerts thanks her for her hospitality during his stay at Barrington Court and is dated Barrington, le 22 Sept 1935. (The Lyles took over the lease of Barrington Court from the National Trust and oversaw and financed its extensive restoration - the Lyles had made their money from sugar i.e. Tate & Lyle). This copy is no. 517 of 1000. 703 pages, colour frontispiece and black and white images throughout. Original cream cloth binding with paper on-lay to the front front board, very good with a little general wear and rubbing, a little dust marked. Contents clean and tight, minimal spotting to page edges, otherwise unmarked. A very good copy with outstanding provenance signed by Luc Haesaerts..

Contains a foreword by Pepler plus a list of the items in the exhibition, three with hand written notes, including prices for the items. Printed on Caslon O. F white paper, sewn. Loosely inserted is a hand printed invite to the private preview on Sunday may 5th, 2.30-6pm. (one sheet, 10.9 x 3.8 inches, folded once). Tears between cover and spine about one inch in at top and bottom, but no loss to spine. Early inscription on the front flyleaf. A scarce work.

William Gilpin was an English artist, Anglican cleric, schoolmaster and author. He was most notable as one of the originators of the concept of the picturesque, a set of rules for depicting nature. This notion would be expounded upon and expanded by other contemporary philosophers.
'An Essay upon Print's, attributed to Gilpin, is one of the first guides on print collecting in English. It became the standard for those collecting all kinds of prints, especially those of 'picturesque' quality. It also cautions against investing in copies of originals and acquiring poor impressions. Gilpin, who remained anonymous as the author, included the names of iconic artists – such as Rembrandt and Poussin – as those whose art is worthy of collecting.
