An incredibly rare and impressive Elzevier printing of Joannes de Laet's "Persia", written to aid in his direction of the Dutch West Indian Company. This work was one of the best books describing Middle Eastern, and Arab, and Islamic history. Laet covers all expected topics of Persian history – topography, geography, religious customs, government and politics, etc. It also includes 17th-century descriptions of Middle Eastern cities such as Baghdad, Damascus, and Mecca. This 1633 first edition includes eight full-page engravings of Persian dress.

Very good copy of William Alexander's translation of Octavian Dalvimart's depiction of the costumes of the Ottoman Empire in the 18th century. A complete set of these charming costume plates showing different ranks of courtiers and servants to the Sultan, enslaved women Sultanas, Odalisks and Eunuchs of the Seraglio or Harem, musicians and dancing girls of Constantinople, whirling dervishes, Spahi and Janissaries, officers and soldiers, Bedouin Arabs, Armenian, Tartar and Jewish men, etc.Title page, vi, and 120 unnumbered pages (60 hand-coloured engraved plates and 60 text pages).First published in 1802, and reissued by various publishers several times until the 1830s. Kutbeddin İznikî was a late 14th-century Ottoman mystic known for his studies in mysticism, Sufism, Shari'a sciences, and even cult leadership. His writings focused on prayer as a form of worship, fasting, fiqh study, Islamic pilgrimages, and through which he emphasizes the importance of the direction of Sheikh.
This 1847 Istanbul printing of Izniki's work was printed in Arabic with each page having a double-line border around the text. A truly rare and rather obscure item found for sale in the English-speaking world.

Nunn; Longman, Hurst, and Rees; and Orm and Brown. Printed by S. and R. Bentley, Dorset Street, Salisbury Square, London. Boards detached and title page is loose along with engraving of Mahomet opposite title page, but both are laid in. Tanning to pages with some foxing. Pages are uneven cut which is common for a book of this age and some pages have closed end tears. The preface is not kind to Islam stating "The Publishers, in disclosing the doctrines of Allah, sinceerely invite the Christian believer to compare them, with the lenient and spiritual character of the Gospel, and in the contrast, the clearness of evangelical light will reveal the dark incongruities of Islamism."
