FIRST EDITION of this rare Arabic manual printed in Rome at the Propoganda de Fidei Press. Dominicus was the editor of the famous Arabic-Latin dictionary printed in the same press in 1639. Father Germanus [1585-1670] succeded Obicini as Lector of Arabic and as a collaborator on the Arabic Bible project. He later stayed for a time in Persia and ended his life as a scholar in Madrid. There he left his manuscript of an unfinished Qur'an translation and grammaqtical treatises of Persian and Turkish. The Propaganda Press was founded in 1622 and in 1626 a true printing house was established together with a foundry named after the Congregatio. FIRST EDITION of the Syriac-Arabic dictionary arranged according to subjects originally compiled in the 11th century by Elias bar Shinaya, Metropolitan of Nisibis, edited with a Latin translation by Obicini. It was published by Obicini's pupil Germanus de Silesia, author of an Arabic Grammar and an Italian-Arabic dictionary. It is dedicated by Achilles Venerius to Cardinal Barbarini. The Syriac types are the 20pt Maronite types and the Arabic of the text Granjon's arabe du kitãb al-Bustãn.
Thomas Obicini (1585-1632) from Novara, was abbot of the Franciscan convent at Aleppo. In 1621 he returned to Rome and became first lector of Arabic in the St Peter Convent. No Binding. Fair/No Jacket. This rare folio is composed of 15 lines of the Quran, in Arabic, on parchment. It was probably created in the 9th century in northern Africa. Calligraphy was an important Arabic art form, seen on ceramics, coins and manuscripts. The highly angular horizontal Kufic seen here was the primary script used in the earliest copies of the Quran from the 7th through the 10th centuries. Diacritical marks indicated by red dots are guides to pronunciation. CONDITION: Loss to the bottom right corner affecting the last three lines. Hole affecting the bottom 4th line. Script on the reverse is faded. DIMENSIONS: 7.5" wide, 5.25" high

This book contains a scholarly study on an original copy of the Holy Quran attributed to the time of Caliph Othman: the copy known as the "Othman (R.A.) Mushaf [Quran copy]" located in the Topkapı Palace Museum. Altıkulaç, a specialist of Quranic studies, has done a meticulous comparative study and technical analysis of the copy; the Introduction explains the method followed and the findings obtained. With only two pages (23 verses) lacking, "Topkapı Mushaf " is the closest to the complete text of the Quran.

Boards detached and title page is loose along with engraving of Mahomet opposite title page, but both are laid in. Tanning to pages with some foxing. Pages are uneven cut which is common for a book of this age and some pages have closed end tears. The preface is not kind to Islam stating "The Publishers, in disclosing the doctrines of Allah, sinceerely invite the Christian believer to compare them, with the lenient and spiritual character of the Gospel, and in the contrast, the clearness of evangelical light will reveal the dark incongruities of Islamism."
