A very scarce Indiana directory covering towns and villages in 19 contiguous counties around Indianapolis with thousands of ads from the items of the era; bicycles and horse-drawn wagons in an age just before the automobile appeared on the scene in Indiana even before 1900. Dr. W.T. McCarthy's full-page ad on how he can cure cancer. This informative directory provides an insight into what Indianans' were interested in at the beginning of the 20th century. The inserts bound into the book include Dr. Bush's Gasaway, Gas Belt. This has the Library of Congress copyright stamp which shows it is one of the two copies, deposited to secure copyright. Bound in 1/4 red cloth over printed tan paper covered boards, spine lettering black, wear to corners, light wear, and soiling to spine. A very good copy.

Douglas visited Richmond on the invitation of the Central Democratic Association, and spoke in the African Church, "the most capacious building of the place . . . A vast audience collected to hear him – filling to overflow the entire hall and galleries, and blocking up the doors, windows, and aisles." (Richmond Examiner). Douglas spoke in support of the Democratic candidate Franklin Pierce against the Whig, Winfield Scott, in the Presidential Campaign. Douglas argued that a professional Army officer, such as Scott, should not be president of a free Republic and noted the Whigs' nativist policies. The southern Democrats were convinced that Franklin Pierce's administration would secure the future of slavery in the territories, while Northern Democrats were relieved to nominate a candidate that did not have any radical pro- or anti-slavery principles. Four beautifully hand coloured plates and black and white engraved vignettes and illustrations throughout. The cloth is in very nice clean condition, with just a little bumping to the top of the spine. Internally clean, but very slightly darkened. iv. 160 pages. 180 by 120mm (7 by 4¾ inches).
