The book is divided into three main sections. The first part deals with the geology of the Libournais region including how it was formed, sediment deposition by rivers, and the current soil profile for each of the subregions. Part two deals wtih the history of wine making in the region with a focus on the 18th century being a transition period where the quality and terroir of a wine become much more important. The third part concerns the years 1792-1982 as wine became a more important part of the economy, speculators entered the wine market, the phyloxera outbrak devastated some historic types of vines, and the eventually modernization and classification of wine types. The second half of the book is a guide to the vineyards of the region, showing off the labels and how to identify each vineyard.
