The Publisher's Notice announces: "The present unabridged translation is, we believe, the first attempt made to offer to English readers this book as it was written". With 52 mounted etchings by Adolphe Lalauze, beginning with the frontispiece portrait. Handsome paper vellum binding with appropriate gilt motifs, with darkening and soiling from handling. Short split beginning to upper front joint (see photo). Marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, fore edge untrimmed. Small blemish facing the half title (see photo). xvi, 516pp, 14 page publisher's catalog dated September 1883, with this edition as the first entry. 9 x 6.5 x 2.25".
