Augustin von Mayern, Freiherr von Meyerberg, a German diplomat, travelled together with Horace Guillaume Calvuccius to the Russian czar in Moscow, in 1661-1663. 'In 1720, Clement XI, wishing to alleviate the hardships of the Church in China, despatched to the East a new legate, G.A. Mezzabarba, Patriarch of Alexandria. On October 12, he reached Canton (Guangzhou) and secured with difficulty an audience with the Kangxi emperor, whom he appeased by promising that the constitution would be mildly interpreted. In fact, on November 4 1721, before starting for Europe, he granted eight permissions, whereby he thought, while maintaining fully the decree of Clement XI, to remedy all hardships resulting therefrom for the converts, especially those of the better class. One depicts on the left side the shipyard, in the middle 's Rijks Magazijn (former storehouse of the Dutch East India Company, now the Maritime Museum) and on the right side the mill and the Kattenburgerbrug. On the foreground the procession of eight sloops surrounded by many other boats and people on the waterside. The other one depicts the opening of the lock of the Ooster-Dok with the procession also surrounded by many other boats and people on the waterside. Van Speyk, Dutch lieutenant in the navy, blew himself up with his gun-boat on the river Schelde on February 5, 1831 to prevent the surrender to the Belgians. The first volume describes China, most of the Far East, and matters related to Chinese culture, like the introduction of Judaism in ancient China. It also includes a broad description of Macau, where the author lived for 16 months, the Philippines and the expedition against the Indonesian pirates of Solor. The second volume describes the relationship of Portugal with Ceylon, Singapore, Malacca, and the east and west coast of Africa (including Mozambique, Angola, São Tomé, and Cape Verde). - A fine set.Gomes, Bibliografia Macaense, 312.

He was an orientalist, in the service of the East India Company (VOC), and resided in Sumatra in 1771-79. He studied everything that came under his notice, including the difficult Sumatran tongue'' (Cox I, p.300). Rogerius left in 1630 and worked in Palicatta (Coromandel) for ten years. He then went to Batavia where he served the Portuguese Church for five years. He repatriated in 1647 and settled in Gouda where he died in 1649' (Landwehr, VOC). This is the first work in Europe to publish the translation of a piece of Sanscrit literature (the Sayings of Bhartrhari, on pp. 291-339). The curious plates depict processions, ceremonies and self-chastisement. A hard-blowing northeastern wind intensified the fire, which ignited one house after another. It lasted for about 24 hours.
