TWO WORKS BOUND IN ONE VOLUME Duodecimo 18th century half-calf, marbled boards (hinges cracked but firm/head & foot of spine chipped/tips worn/spine label missing) Armorial bookplate William Powlett Powlett on front endpaper. First work (Ninon) in three Parts: [4], viii, 120; [2], viii, 120; [2], 128. Second work (Quinzaine) missing 1st 2 leaves including titlepage, begins with the Preface at aiii followed by the second title: [12 of xvi] 287, [1] pp. *Two books considered improper at the time,are here bound together,the first work disguising the presence of the second so that the spine reads only "Ninon de l'Enclos &c" Quinzaine .. is an amusing satirical work by James (or Jean Jacques) Rutledge which was published without attribution to him, first printing in 1776. Octavo panelled sprinkled calf on 4 raised bands with red gilt spine title label (rebacked but one cover now detached/top compartment of spine damaged/edges slightly worn) Titlepage +[14]pp Dedication & Preface +203pp +[8]pp index. The 4 contents leaves that presumably belonged at the front are misbound after page 194. Coat of arms book plate of G.W.F. Gregor on pastedown. Index and a few leaves with pale marginal damp mark but all leaves, clean, crisp & supple. *The author complains that the price of drugs has increased rapidly and without cause during his tenure at St. Barts. That there is mis-prescription and fashion in drugs when there are perfectly good remedies available for much less money. This was also a territorial dispute between physicians and apothecaries who, during the late 17th and early 18th centuries had encroached on doctor's rights to prescribing and making up of their own medicines. Floral headpieces & historiated intial coloured read + 2nd work with added text illustrations as well as the above decorations.. Two Works in One small quarto 183x140mm rebound in full brown levant on 4 raised bands with 2 black spine labels gilt and gilt date to foot of spine. Newer edpapers, small bookplate of Alan John Jarvis, [iv]+20pp; [vi]+126+[4]pp Table. Long ownership inscription on back of titlepage (John Thomas 1751) with name repeated at end of 1st work, John Davies on back of 2nd titlepage with a few ink notes by both owners in margins of later pages. Paper browned throughout, edges frayed and cropped at top at end of book.
