The text is illustrated with thirty-two black and white photographs. Rose coloured cloth covered boards with black coloured titles to the back strip. The author, comes out of hospital after a serious operation, and decides to take a motoring holiday in the vast open spaces. In three months, he travels 16,822 miles around Australia, in a quest of adventure and information. Softening and rubbing of the back strip edges with rubbing of the top book corners and lower book edges. Light tanning and a few foxing spots to the text block edges with age toning of the pages. Rust coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. The wild men of the Lachlan, the Murrumbidgee and the Abercrombie Ranges in the lawless 1860's of Australia's history. The book is showing age and wear – please see photograph. Softening, rubbing and fraying of the cloth to the back strip; bumping, rubbing and fraying of the book corners. The cloth of the lower edge of the front panel has also afraid to the lower left hand corner and along the spine gutter edges the cloth has also started to fray. The rear section of the book has 109 plates, but the title page indicate that there are 118 illustrations. I cannot find the extra 9 illustrations. The dust jacket has short tears across both top and bottom edge, with minimal loss, and is now protected. The book itself shows no damage that is worth detailing apart from a trace of foxing to the front free end page. In this book, Franklin, who was born in Sydney in the 1890s, traces the development of his home town from its small and oppressed beginnings at the end of the 18th century to its great spread of civilised achievement day.
