London: Duckworth & Co. 1906. (Hardcover) 272pp. Very good plus. Issued without dust jacket. Dark blue leather with gilt decorations and raised bands to the spine and gilt cover decoration. Marbled edges, marbled endpapers, photographic frontispiece, photographic and illustrated plates, index. There is a previous owner's book plate on the front fixed endpaper and the interior pages are lightly speckled. "This book has grown out of lectures delivered to the Haileybury Natural Science Society. From the nature of the case, therefore, it aims at being intelligible without the help of much preliminary knowledge. Some of the lectures, however, were delivered to a small number of the elder members of the society, and the subject matter of some of these was in itself rather difficult. My object has been, not to shirk difficult questions, to make them clear to anyone who will give his attention to the subject" - from the Preface.
