In the immediate foreground is now lost lighthouse which marked the entrance to the original port of Genoa. The city's harbor extends to the left and has two ships floating in it. 1708. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 12 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches.

This baroque-style print of a lemon is from Volckamer's Nürnbergische Hesperides, which depicts large-scale citrus fruits above views of gardens, palaces, and villages in Germany, Austria, and Italy. The lemon floats above Villa Giustiniano. Johann Christoph Volckamer (1641 - 1720) was a German merchant, manufacturer and botanist whose interest in citrus fruits began with his own orangery in Nuremberg. In this practice, Volckamer was ahead of his time, as it quickly became popular among the aristocracy in Central Europe to grow Mediterranean fruits, utilizing greenhouses in the winter to protect them from the cold climate. Some of his favorite regions were Nuremberg and Verona. Today, Volckamer's prints are highly prized as showcases of the gardening and architecture of the baroque period.
