This, the first of Ardizzone’s homages to the English Pub, was printed by the Curwen Press and can be seen as a companion to Eric Ravilious’s ‘High Street’. It was issued without a dust-jacket. In the successor volume, Maurice Gorham noted that the unsold copies of ‘The Local’, together with its printed sheets and plates, “went up together in the burning of Cassell’s premises in Belle Sauvage Yard”. London: Cassell and Company Limited, 1939. Beautifully illustrated book of colour lithographs by Edward Ardizzone depicting the interiors of Lonon Public Houses and the people using them. First edition 1939 containing 51pages in bright clean condition just some light browning to endpapers and previous owners ink details on front endpaper, 15 full page colour illustrations, all present as listed plus very informative text. NO dustwrapper, outer illustrated boards are a little marked and worn on edges and corners, spine has become detached and lost over the years but binding is sound. London: Cassell, 1939. First Edition. First UK Edition. Publisher's original paper-covered boards. Illustrations by Edward Ardizzone. Fifteen colour lithograph plates (of which one double-page) as called for. Foxing to the end-papers and nibbling at the head of the spine. The all-important very fragile spine of the book is PRESENT and is still ATTACHED although it is just starting to split at the base of the spine at the left hand side. A much nicer copy than normally seen which is in near fine condition with the Ardizzone illustrations in lovely, fine condition. These copies are scarce because Cassell (the publishers) were bombed in the London Blitz and unsold copies destroyed.
