Vol. 1 examines the origins of Marxism, tracing its descent, through Hegel and the Enlightenment, from the neo-Platonists, showing Marx's development of thought and divergence from other forms of socialism. Vol. 2 discusses the doctrine of the leading Marxists and controversies among them in the era of the 2nd International, including Kautsky, Rosa Luxemburg, Plekhanov, Lenin, and Georges Sorel. Vol. 3 includes an analysis of Stalinism and a discussion of the impact of Marxism on Soviet culture, examining the contributions of Trotsky, Gramsci, Lukacs, Marcuse and others, while tracing the developments in Marxism since the Second World War.
