First published in 1675 (this copy is a 5th edition) was reprinted several times in the 17th and 18th centuries. John Wilkins (1614-1672) was a clergyman and scholar, who studied astronomy, mathematics and natural philosophy. Printed for T. Basset; Joanna Brome; R. Chiswel, 1683. Hardcover. Very Good. Full contemporary calf leather binding with tooled ruled borders and decorative corners to boards, four raised bands to spine, red leather spine label; frontispiece engraved portrait; (14), 410, (4) 56 pp.; separate title page for the Sermon, dated 1673. Ownership inscription (and scribble) of Walter Radcliffe 1750 on title page. Some wear to leather but intact, sturdy, and clean. Wilkins was one of the founders of the Royal Society, as well as of natural theology, which tried to balance theology with scientific method and discoveries. Two hundred years later, Wilkins was the subject of an essay by Jorge Luis Borges, who discussed Wilkins' idea of a universal language. Borges' essay, in turn, was inspiration for Michel Foucault's "The Order of Things.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
