London: Chatto & Windus, 1964. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the First UK edition, first printing (spine ends gently pushed, lower front corner bent, lower rear corner bumped) in a Very Good dust jacket (light toning to the spine and to each panel's upper edge, short tear where the rear panel meets the spine head, common handling soil), SIGNED BY PAR LAGERKVIST on the title page as follows: "from Par Lagerkvist"; a continuation of an allegorical tale by the great Swedish poet, playwright, novelist, and essayist attempting to polarize the Christian ethos and modern attitudes (being a sequel to "The Death of Ahasuerus" and being the fourth and planned final installment of Lagerkvist's tetralogy consisting of "Barabbas", "The Sybil", "The Death of Ahasuerus", and "Pilgrim at Sea" -- Lagerkvist's "The Holy Land" turned out to be a fifth installment in the allegory). Elected in 1940 as one of the 18 "Immortals" of the Swedish Academy, Lagerkvist was as highly influential writer from his twenties into his seventies, and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1951 "for the artistic vigour and true independence of mind with which he endeavors in his poetry to find answers to the eternal questions confronting mankind". Signed copies of Lagerkvist's works are quite scarce and, beyond our shelves, signed copies in English translation are especially so. This copy belonged to actor and decorated WWII Navy Veteran Douglas Fairbanks whose bookplate resides on the front pastedown. A Very Good copy in a Very Good dust jacket and with an excellent Provenance, SIGNED BY PAR LAGERKVIST. QUITE SCARCE.

Crane, who was 22 years old at the time, financed the book's publication himself, although the original 1893 edition was printed under the pseudonym Johnston Smith. v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
