Tree calf leather with gilt decorations to the covers, raised bands and gilt lettering and decorations on the spine. All edges art-gilt, marbled endpapers, frontispiece, indices, ribbon bookmark. There is a previous bookseller's discreet sticker on the rear endpaper. "James Russell Lowell was born on the 22nd of February 1819, at cambirdge, Massachusetts. He was descended on the father's side from a family of English gentlemen, one of whom, Percival Lowell, emigrated to America in 1639, and died at Newbury, Massachusetts, in 1665. The Lowells prospered" - from the Prefatory Memoir. Includes The Biglow Papers. Series: Albion Edition. (Poetry, Fine Bindings, Poetry).
