Sobre este artículo

Andre Deutsch Ltd, London, first edition, 1967. Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm,. 356 pp, 8 plates. From the blurb - "Antonio Panizzi, who came to England as a political refugee from Italy in the 1820's, was an exceptional man by any standards: he was largely responsible for creating the Library of the British Museum as we know it today, he did much by his career and example to enhance the profession of librarianship, and he secured a lasting place in the cultural history of nineteenth century Britain. Panizzi first came to the public attention as a young radical in trouble with a reactionary government for his liberal opinions and political activities. He fled to England, and began a new life in Liverpool, which he found to be a very cultivated city. He taught English and came close to starvation. After moving to London he lectured on Italian literature - to miniscule audiences - then gradually moved from this occupation to the more secure one of librarianship at the British Museum. His career at the Museum is an astonishing record of efficiency and reform.. Top edge of spine sunned, otherwise Good in used dustwrapper which is browned on the flaps.

Sobre Wykeham Books

We specialize chiefly in "books about books", the emphasis being on historical aspects of book collecting, production and distribution. A particular speciality is in bibliographies, of all subjects of interest to collectors, dealers and scholars, with several thousand bibliography titles in stock. Other strengths include extensive holdings of auction catalogues for book sales and a good selction of reference material on and facsimiles of illuminated manuscripts. We also have a special interest in rare material by or about Rudyard Kipling.
