From the blurb - "Antonio Panizzi, who came to England as a political refugee from Italy in the 1820's, was an exceptional man by any standards: he was largely responsible for creating the Library of the British Museum as we know it today, he did much by his career and example to enhance the profession of librarianship, and he secured a lasting place in the cultural history of nineteenth century Britain. Panizzi first came to the public attention as a young radical in trouble with a reactionary government for his liberal opinions and political activities. He fled to England, and began a new life in Liverpool, which he found to be a very cultivated city. He taught English and came close to starvation. After moving to London he lectured on Italian literature - to miniscule audiences - then gradually moved from this occupation to the more secure one of librarianship at the British Museum.
