The Norwegian, naturalist, anthropologist and explorer Carl Lumholtz spent four years in Australia from 1880. Lumholtz' expedition to Australia was partly paid at the expense of the University of Christiania, to collect zoological and zootomical material for the museums of the University, and research the manners and anthropology of the natives, and among the cannibals. Lumholtz succeeded in securing a large collection of zoological specimens and discovered four new mammals - a tree kangaroo and three opossums, which are depicted in the colored lithographed plates. He collected four new species of mammals with his account of his travels, Among Cannibals, containing detailed observations of Aboriginal life.

Brisbane: Barker's Bookstores, 1937. 1st ed.. Hardback small octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in good dustjacket), black & white photos includes frontispiece, pages lightly toned & foxed, reverse side jacket little marked (lightly toned & foxed, edges little rubbed, minor edgewear, flap corners trimmed). 135 pp. Thomas (Thos) Welsby has wriitten an important local history of Bribie Island, plus a brief mention of Myora Mission on North Stradbroke Island. There is a chapter about Bongaree, the Aboriginal guide who accompanied Matthew Flinders. The author has identified Bribie as a Moreton Bay fish-hawking convict but it is uncertain if Bribie was a firstname or surname, but he definitely was a convict who made baskets to earn money. This history turns up some interesting details about the island. The last chapter is about native nomenclature. Welsby was a Queensland politician. A great addition to a collection about Queensland. Hulme, Keri: The Bone People. Louisiana State University Press, A tale of New Zealand. Stated United States First Edition, 1985. 450 pages, indexed. WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).

Heavy book: extra charges for expedited or international shipping. Captain Nicolas Baudin's early 19th-century voyage of scientific discovery to Australia is a little-known event in French and Australian history. Yet that voyage played an important part in the history of Australian and Pacific colonization, and in the long story of worldwide scientific exploration. Departing Le Havre in 1800, Baudin's expedition comprised two ships--the Naturaliste and the Géographe--and 238 men, including 22 scientists.
