This book, now over thirty years old, is still a must-have for any lay person fan of the Late Bronze Age in general and the Sea Peoples in particular. The topic is probably over a hundred years old now among professionals but it was this book that introduced the subject to general audiences. The author was introduced to me through the superb Michael Wood's documentary, "In search of the Trojan War." She is an excellent writer and covers all the known facts up to that time in this profusely illustrated book. The type is readable and clear. The original HC edition is now a collectible over $100 U.S. but this PB edition has held up very well for all the use I've given it. You may be wondering what has changed in the field since then. The answer seems to be largely in newer findings on the Philistines. At the time of this book it was still somewhat speculative to identify the Philistines with the Sea People's tribe called the "Peleset" by Ancient Egyptian sources. It is pretty well accepted these days as fact. In fact, a lot has come out on the Philistines in the last few years. But this book remains the CLASSIC introduction to the topic of the Sea Peoples. In truth, the ancient sources haven't changed and are over 3,000 years old, only our interpretations and conclusions have evolved in light of newer findings. This book remains the best layman's introduction to the Sea Peoples and I can't recommend it highly enough.
