Top edge gilt. Adverts dated March 1894 at the end. Original publishers decorative pale purple cloth boards and spine, designed by Charles Shannon, bound in at the rear.

Half dark blue morocco, five raised bands to spine, each with gilt dotting. Compartments ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Blue cloth on boards with single gilt ruled border on leather edges. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Housed in a felt lined slip case with blue cloth covering. Fully illustrated by Pogany with illustrated title page, 20 tipped-in colour plates, scores of other mono and two colour illustrations printed in light green and mauve, some full page, and calligraphic text, all within decorative borders, all illustrated or written by Pogany. A fine copy in the scarce publishers deluxe burgundy coloured suede binding with yapp edges. Lovely bright and clean gilt decoration and lettering to the front board. Top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. Original illustrated end papers. A fine and truly handsome copy of this classic work and a remarkable survivor. The suede bindings of this period are fragile and prone to drying out, often resulting in the suede perishing and the yapp edges splitting. Rare in this condition.

Half titles present in all three volumes. Two leaves duplicated and incorrectly inserted into the end of volume two, namely 2 pages from the index which appears in volume 3 have been bound in in error, one where page 513/4 should be (easy to see how, both leaves share the signature Ll), the other at the end of the text where a blank should be, and the two leaves of Appendix are bound in the wrong order but complete. A neat previous owner name to the top of the title page in volume 3. Some foxing and offsetting of the text block to a few leaves in each volume, particularly the first pages of volume one, but overall a very good set.
