New York: I. Riley & Co., 1807. John Carr's (1772-1832) wrote a series of travel books that were popular, but critics thought him pedestrian and some accused him of plagiarism. His works are scarce to rare now. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the Third American Edition, published one year after the English. Full leather binding, rather worn but sound. The title on the spine is faint but discernable as red & gilt. The text is clean; 334 pages. Floodmarking throughout, but not contaminated. Previous-owner has signed in the rear endpapers with cartoon heads and replicated "the end" on the last page. Quite interesting period calligraphy! The last signature of the textblock seems weak but holding. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Third Edition.. Full-Leather. Very Good Minus/No Jacket.

Philadelphia: T. & G. Palmer for Samuel F. Bradford and others, 1806. First American Edition. Hardcover. Fair. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. A title scarce in the trade, a copy of the First American Edition, penned by Sir John Carr (1772-1832) in 1804 upon an extensive tour he took there. Original full leather binding, bowed front board, gilt ruled to spine, rubbed spine label, chip missing from spine head. Extensive gift presentation in pen at first free endpaper from 1839, but illegible as to particulars, leading to some off-setting, opposite. Missing half of the Page of Dedication, loss also of some of the Preface, wavy text-block, some marginal notes and some contemporary underlining in sections, penciled math notes at rear opposite pastedown, some tide-lines to margins, else clean and readable, still tightly bound. Devonshire, England-born, John Carr was popular for his breezy, chatty, friendly accounts of his journeys around Europe were popular for their light and chatty style, and closely… Leer más

Descripción:
Philadelphia: Samuel F. Bradford, et al., 1806. First American edition, published the same year as the London edition, but unfortunately without the plates. A lawyer by training, Sir John Carr began to travel for health reasons. He was one of the earlier writers of travel literature and produced a number of accounts of his journeys in various European countries. One folding plate on the state of the weather in Dublin (doesn't seem to have changed much). Early, contemporaneous(?) calf with gilt-lettered red-leather spine label and gilt spine rules. A good only copy with spine and edges worn but binding wholly intact. Though internally very good with no foxing and just one stain to the front endpaper and tiny nick to base of first few leaves.
