Very Good. 1931 University of Wyoming doctoral thesis submitted by Joseph Conrad Twinem pertaining to the genesis of the geological development of the lithosphere of southeastern Wyoming. Includes discussions of dozens of formations and numerous skillfully executed watercolors of cross-sections of formations, etc. Of special interest are four large watercolors, two of them 3-panel fold outs, of Wyoming landscapes, and one of the Rock Creek oil fields. Also includes 36 2 3/4" x 4 1/2" original, unique photos inserted in corner mounts - views of Wyoming camp facilities, canyons, mountains, striking geological features, Independence Rock, gold mining operations, the Pathfinder Dam, Parco, Wyoming (street view), oil distillers, a Snow Range sericite mine and much more. New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1918. Later Edition/Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. In green pictorial cloth with green illustrations and titling. Light edgewear to spine ends. Owner's name, date, address and ""yosemite - 43"" to top of ffep. A small rectangular stain to bottom of ffep where something was laid in place for a while, also tape stains(not scars) to top and bottom of endpapers - assuming where protected jacket rested. Bug hole to top inside of front hinge and rear hinge is beginning to split at top, but still solid. Interior and exterior very clean otherwise. Jacket is very nice with just a few small chip/nicks to spine ends, corners and top edge of flaps, and two 1/2 inch closed tears to top of rear panel and top of rear flap. Later edition/printing based on date of book advertised on rear flap and owner's date - 1925 at the earliest. Three period photos from previous owner laid in.

Small square octavo, pp xvi, 144, (4). + publisher's catalogue 8 pages, with 12 lithographed plates, delicately hand-coloured, all edges gilt, very clean internally, a contemporary signature on the front endpaper [Charles H. Hingeston, 1852], original blind-stamped cloth, gilt lettering on upper cover, slightly faded, a little worn at the corners, very neatly re-backed with a modern cloth spine, unlettered. Still a very pleasing copy of a work which is difficult to find in good condition. [In many ways a ground-breaking work, as was much of Mantell's opus. It alerted the Victorians to an aspect of natural history which had previously largely escaped them, and was a remarkable precursor to the germ theory.]. Cloth. Very Good.
