1641 ENGLISH 1ed Henri II Duke of Rohan Huguenot Memoirs Civil Wars Savoy Spain

Henri II Duke of Rohan was an early 17th-century Huguenot leader whose personal memoirs offer an important insight into the life of a 17th-century French noble. A work which was widely read throughout Europe and England, Rohan's memoirs covered the vast impact of European civil wars, wars of the Savoy, the political and diplomatic interests of Spain, Italy, and France, the papacy of Paul V, on the Kingdom of Bohemia, and succession of the nobles in Mantua and Montserrat.

This 1641 first edition was translated into English by Henry Hunt.

o Armorial bookplate – Fairfax of Cameron

Lord Fairfax of Cameron is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. This bookplate could possibly belong to Thomas Fairfax, 3rd Lord Fairfax of Cameron (1612–1671), an English politician, general and Parliamentary commander-in-chief during the English Civil War. An adept and talented commander, Fairfax led Parliament to many victories, notably the crucial Battle of Naseby, becoming effectively military ruler of England, but was eventually overshadowed by his subordinate Oliver Cromwell, who was more politically adept and radical in action against Charles I. Fairfax became unhappy with Cromwell's policy and publicly refused to take part in Charles's show trial. Eventually he resigned, leaving Cromwell to control the country. Because of this, and also his honourable battlefield conduct and his active role in the Restoration of the monarchy after Cromwell's death, he was exempted from the retribution exacted on many other leaders of the revolution.

o Handwritten – [Phillip Tirwhitt]

Likely Sir Philip Tyrwhitt, 4th Baronet MP of Stainfield, Lincolnshire, father of Sir John Tyrwhitt.

o Handwritten – [J. Tyrwhitt]

Sir John Tyrwhitt, 5th Baronet (c. 1663–1741), of Stainfield, Lincolnshire, was a British landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1715 and 1734.
