SECOND EDITION 1877, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR IN OLD INK, (first published in 1862), 8vo, mounted original photograph of the author as a frontispiece and facsimile letter not issued in the first edition, engraved extra title page with views of Chateau Margaux and Chateau Lafitte, grape harvesting and pressing, wine cellars, bottles and barrels, plus 19 plates including 4 maps (French wine growing districts), and a folded facsimile sheet of an autograph contract between Lord Bronte Nelson and Woodhouse & Co., pages: viii, 519 including index, plus 7 page advert, bound in the original publisher's green cloth, decorated and lettered black to upper cover, gilt lettered spine with small gilt bunch of grapes motif beneath author's name, blind rules and motif to lower cover. Covers slightly damp faded towards fore-edge, corners slightly worn, 5 mm (¼") split to cloth at foot of upper hinge, 10 mm (½") closed tear to upper margin of page 423, another slightly larger to top margin of folded facsimile of an agreement which faces page 424, both neatly repaired. A very good clean tight complete copy. The plates show Oporto wine boats, Douro boats sailing up the river, pressing the grapes and filling the tanks, women training the vines, harvesting the grape in Medoc, wine pests, bottling champagne, Elz on the Moselle etc. The book covers a wide variety of European wines, Champagne and wines of Australia.
