Sobre este artículo

Challenger Publications. Very Good/Very Good. 1999. Hard Cover. 4yp 1899624392 Dust jacket complete, unclipped, small rubbed area on upper cover. Illustrated boards. No ownership inscription. iv, 92 pages clean and tight. During and immediately after World War 2, the LNER was desperate for motive power, especially heavy freight locomotives. The railways of the United Kingdom were shouldering most of the burden of moving the vast tonnage requirements of wartime and ever more so prior to the Liberation of Europe. In 1943 the War Department introduced a 2-8-0 locomotive capable of hauling heavy freight trains, whilst at the same time was able to do so with minimum maintenance, carried out in less than ideal conditions. The Riddles WD 2-8-0 or `Austerity' locomotive was destined to be used both on mainland Europe, once the Allied Armies had gained a foothold, and in other countries where required. Over 900 of these `far from elegant' locomotives would eventually be built for war service but in the interim period, and before service overseas, many were loaned to the mainline railway companies of which the LNER had the `lions share' comprising 350 engines `on loan' in 1944. After the ending of hostilities the LNER purchased 200 `WD's', classified 07, whilst having `on loan' a further 270 by Nationalisation. With further purchases in 1948, BR went on to own some 733 WD 2-8-0s. Working alongside the Riddles 2-8-0 on the LNER were 68 Stanier LMS designed 2-8-Os built between June 1944 and October 1946. Designated LNER Class 06, these engines were sent away to the LMS on the eve of Nationalisation after helping the LNER through a somewhat `lean' period of motive power shortage. Finally, in 1946 the LNER purchased a batch of 75 surplus 0-6-0 saddle tank locomotives from the WD to supplement its fleet of shunting engines. .
