No ownership inscription. iv, 92 pages clean and tight. During and immediately after World War 2, the LNER was desperate for motive power, especially heavy freight locomotives. The railways of the United Kingdom were shouldering most of the burden of moving the vast tonnage requirements of wartime and ever more so prior to the Liberation of Europe. In 1943 the War Department introduced a 2-8-0 locomotive capable of hauling heavy freight trains, whilst at the same time was able to do so with minimum maintenance, carried out in less than ideal conditions. The Riddles WD 2-8-0 or `Austerity' locomotive was destined to be used both on mainland Europe, once the Allied Armies had gained a foothold, and in other countries where required.
