This is Volume I only of two and consists of 630 pages of text plus a 373 page appendix plus an 18 page index which goes only to U making me believe the last leaf is missing. This is a binding copy as the boards are missing. The binding is tight with the leaves quite clean and have foxing mostly at the front end There is a library stamp on the title page..

London: John Tallis and Company [circa 1850s]. (4to) Very good. Pebble grained cloth over 3 / 4 brown leather with ribbed spines. Marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, 43 steel engravings, double page map with outlines in color. The top corner of the back cover of Vol.1 has been damp and is a bit distorted, the spines are lightly faded, and some of the plates have spotting and dampstains. In Ireland, the High Crosses marked sanctuaries, under the invocation of certain saints, and offered protection to a fugitive who sought shelter there. This publication focuses on those crosses at Castledermot Monastery and at Durrow. Scarce. In Very Good- Condition: cover is lightly soiled; shadow on front cover; chipping along cover edges; lacking upper corner of back cover; front cover is partially detached from tail; minor chipping along fore-edge of several plates; pages and plates are clean and bright.
