The author's most famous book and, at the time of its publication, this title was the world's record-breaker for book sales. A scarce book to locate when signed by the author. An early presentation since Blanck's "Bibliography Of American Literature" notes a copyright deposit copy recorded on April 15 and advertising first appearing in the beginning of May. Presentation copies of this title are rare, with only the Crocker and Doheney copies being sold at auction in the last 25 years. Very Good (gilt on spine somewhat dull). Basis for the 1946 movie, starring Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart as Philip Marlowe. The movie script, based on one of Chandler's premier mystery novels, was co-authored by William Faulkner. Signed presentation from Maugham on front black page: "For Ingle Barr, This is a novel, not an autobiography, though much in it is autobiographical, more is pure invention. W. Somerset Maugham. 28 August, 1957." With Barr's personal bookplate on the front pastedown and with the original shipping address laid in. Signed presentation from Braine on the front endpaper: "John Braine. With my best wishes to Harold Downs." Downs is a teacher whose students spotted a grammatical error in the text. With a typed letter signed from Braine to Downs laid in: "It is very flattering to have one's work discussed- I should have dearly loved to have listened in- though rather frightening. For, no matter how much care one takes, errors creep in. Often I've spotted errors in others work myself, and each time have vowed that I would never be so careless. Alas, I have sinned. Basis for the hit play, starring George Jessel and Sam Jaffe. The play was later adapted to the famous film, starring Al Jolson and Warner Oland. Basis for the 1948 Academy Award winning movie of the same name, starring Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Lionel Barrymore, Edward G. Robinson and Claire Tevor. Trevor won the Academy Award. This first edition copy is signed on the Prologue page by the entire 24-member cast of the first performance on any stage, in the English Theatre, Indianapolis, Ind., on Monday, October 30, 1939. Those signing include Jose Ferrer, Carl Malden, Charles Ellis, Paul Muni, and others. A unique, and probably one-of-a-kind, copy of a scarce book. Very Good in a lovely dust jacket. Curtis/ from his friend and classmate/ O.W. Holmes." Curtis, who went on to the U.S. Supreme Court, is best known for his dissenting opinion in the infamous Dred Scott Case, a case which eventually led to his resignation from the nation's high court. Small 8vo., beautiful black full-morocco leather, ornately stamped in gilt; gilt-tooled inner dentelles & marbled endpapers; folded sheet has been backed with linen cloth at some point which has allowed it to survive in very nice condition. An engraved broadsheet with 24 oval vignette engravings by Robert Dighton, plus a portrait of Benjamin Franklin, with each engraving giving a maxim from Franklin's "Poor Richard's Almanack"- published in the American colonies from 1732 to 1757. They include some of Poor Richard's best-known maxims, such as: "A small leak will sink a great ship" and "Early to bed and early to rise make a man healthy, wealthy and wise. Possibly the earliest illustrated compilation of Franklin's maxims. This sheet was published by Bancks & Co. in Manchester, presumably shortly after Franklin's death. Boston: Wellspring Press, 1974. First Edition. Signed presentation from the author on the front endpaper: "Best regards to the Peets. Ronald H. Marcks ("Jens O. Parsson")" Marcks' Dying of Money, written under the pen name Jens O. Parsson, is perhaps the best explanation ever written on the process by which inflation works through markets and the economy. He wrote "Dying of Money" in 1974, at the height of the double-digit inflation then raging, analyzing its causes and accurately predicting its future. His analysis of the financing gap in Social Security was published in the Wall Street Journal in the 1980's. Economic history of inflation written in terms clear for the layperson, but also with the technical validity enough for the seasoned economist. Marcks self-published this book using the pen name Jens O. Parsson and used Wellspring Press as the name of the publisher.
