Marcellin Berthelot (1827-1907) was a French scientist and professor at College de France in Paris. Berthelot believed that all chemical reactions depend on the physical forces that can be measured. This is copy number 1172 of 1200 signed by Matisse in pencil on colophon.100 colourful crayon and pencil lithographs on loose pages, printed on thick Velin d'Arches paper at the Mourlot workshop in Paris. Illustrated frontis of medieval poet Charles, Duke of Orleans [1394-1465], who, taken prisoner after the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. Many of his poems were written during his long captivity over a 25 year period. He wrote courtly and romantic poems set in ballad and rondeau forms. A Dominican friar and writer, Remigio Nannini produced religious as well as secular works, and poetry. One of the earliest monographs to be printed covering the court transcriptions of the Salem Witchcraft Trials of 1692-93, of whom 200 were accused and 19 executed by hanging. This work includes witness testimony, indictments, examinations and executions of those who were convicted. Samuel Gardener Drake (1798-1875) was an American antiquarian, historian and founder of the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Howe, 666.
