Hardcover. A unique look at human sexuality and literary Romantic love in the early part of the twentieth century during the colonial and modernist eras. As noted by the famous French philosopher Michel Foucault in his "repressive hypothesis," the age of Victorian repression clearly produced non-traditional expressions of lust. The epistolary consists of an original diary and correspondence between two lovers from 1912 to approximately 1916. It is written primarily in English with some excerpts in Italian. The primary diarist is presumed to be an Italian officer during the colonial era of the early 20th century involving Italy, Britain and the "Mad Mullah" in the Benadir region of East Africa. The other correspondent is probably a British lady living in Tuscany at the time. The epistolary includes more than one hundred original drawings of various sexual acts, most of which are in color and include detailed descriptions of the scenes depicted. Full burgundy morocco, sides and spines elaborately decorated in gold with Art Noveau motifs, top edges gilt, others uncut, red and white morocco doublures decorated in gold, pearl silk moire endpapers. Frontispieces and plates in three states, one colored. Spines uniformly darkened, some wear to extremities, a few of the hinges a bit tender. Four volumes show small loss to the head of the spine; one has the cover partially detached. In all, two very elegant complete sets with matching letters. ; Octavo.

Full black morocco with four raised bands and gilt lettering on the spine, top edge gilt, blue endpapers. The binding is signed by M. J. Laney. Light toning to text block, a hint of foxing to half-title page, tiny tear to corner of the first page of the advertisements and minuscule scrape to spine. A near fine copy. With fifty-four plates and an engraved illustration in the text by A. de Neuville and L. Benett and a small drawing by Verne. Introduction by Adrien Marx. Translated by George M. Towle. In his article in the July/August 1996 issue of Firsts Arthur B. Edwards notes that "... there is a fully illustrated Osgood octavo edition, published at the end of November, 1873, taken from the British sheets. This is titled Around the World in Eighty Days, and is very scarce. It seems to have had production problems that caused the spine to crack and chip when the book was read; consequently no 1873 copies have been seen in better than good condition (p. 42)." Hardcover. iiii, [i], 6-28 numbered leaves + 26 numbered leaves, [1], [2] unnumbered leaves including index, errata, colophon, and printer's device. Aldus engraved printer's device to title page and and verso of last leaf. Later full calf tooled in gold on the sides, spine with gilt decorations and red morocco label lettered in gold, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt inner dentelles. This exceedingly scarce title is extremely important in the history of humanist literature and marks Aristotle's influence on literature from the time of the Renaissance through the period of Romanticism. The rediscovery of the Greek philosopher's Poetics in the early 1500s had a profound impact on literary theory, especially in poetry.
