This is the tale of a Frenchman and two boys who journey from Le Havre to California in search of gold. We are told of their hard work at the gold mines, the joys and travails of mining life, and their sundry adventures. Bound in elaborate, pictorial black cloth, stamped in gilt and colors on both covers and on spine; inner rear hinge repaired, otherwise near fine condition. 7.75" x 4.75" This is Dan Volkmann's copy with his Golden Bear bookplate. Volkmann spent 39 years collecting a complete first-edition set of Californiana books called the Zamorano 80--a feat accomplished by only three other collectors. [Gumuchian 1159. Sabin 12350. 1925. Original photograph album. Very Good. Oblong, string-tied album of black cardstock leaves, 11" x 13", photographs mounted on 35pp, blanks at the rear. Bound in black, flexible boards with an embossed sailing ship and gilt lettering (Photo-Album) on the cover. Pasted in are 116 albumen and silver gelatin prints, ranging from small candids to 8 ½" x 10 ½" group portraits, a few fading, overall sharp and clean. Laid into the album are a Japanese news article, a small head-shot of an older gentleman, and a watercolor portrait (10" x 8 ¼") of a man's face. Most of the photographs in this album. circa 1895-1925, were taken in Mie-Ken (or "Mie prefecture"), part of the Kansai region on the main island of Honshu. The group and individual portraits reflect new social and economic developments and cultural norms that emerged during this period. 1872. Original archive. Hardcover. Good. This archive includes a bound volume and several leaves of a handwritten, personal diary in the form of a ship's logbook kept by US Navy officer Robert W. McCleery, starting at New York on September 30, 1871 and ending in November, 1872. Also present: a photographic carte-de-visite of McCleery, a couple of Civil War-era telegrams, a family letter, several pieces of paper ephemera found tipped-in or laid into the log, and various handwritten lists of equipment and instructional notes for a running a steamship. Total: (3) + (8) + (6) + (91) pages of entries. Dates on the loose leaves range from Nov. 20 1871 to Jan. 9, 1872. The logbook covers nearly the full year of voyaging from January through November, 1872. Robert W. McCleery died in 1863, a casualty of the Civil War.
