BAIRD, Henry Carey. CABINET MAKER'S ALBUM OF FURNITURE. Philadelphia: Henry Carey Baird, 1868. Small oblong folio (7 x 10 3/4 inches Publisher's cloth. Printed title leaf, leaf listing plates, 48 lithograph plates. First edition. Baird's pattern book was the third such work published in America and one of most pivotal books in shaping American taste. It included a comprehensive ra of items from bureaus, desks, wardrobes, chairs, bookcases, tables, and beds. The style incorporated American colonial design with French and European tast and was heavily influenced by Desire Gulimard's French pattern books. The amalgam of tastes was largely created by Joseph Bonaparte (the elder brother Napoleon) constructing a magnificent house, Point Breeze, twenty-five miles north of Philadelphia. He greatly influenced the monied society that hovered around him, bringing with him sophisticated tastes in furniture not commonly seen before on this side of the Atlantic. A remarkable work which describes and illustrates 24 ice sculptures which had been erected in the streets and squares of Antwerp in January 1772. The text gives full details of the sculptures, the location, dimensions, subject and the name of the sculptor. The plates are all printed on thick paper and the subjects are mostly drawn from classical mythology. The artists are all members of the Antwerp academy, and the work is dedicated to Charles Alexandre, Duc de Lorraine de Bar, who was also patron of the academy. An uncut copy.

This library is specialized in primarily residential architecture but also includes general architecture, landscape architecture and a very limited number of interior design titles. It generally spans from c. 1900 to the present, with a small number of late 19th century titles. It is believed that only a single title is a low-quality, print-on-demand edition. Many are unavailable for purchase anywhere. I have been assembling this collection for 50 years. Anyone requesting to examine the collection will have to confirm their identity. I am willing to consider selling individually selected titles.
A number of international titles are from numerous countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia, thus the collection is broadly representative of worldwide architecture.
