Atlantic Monthly / Little Brown, 1963. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Signed and inscribed by Man Ray with an original drawing of his trademark floating eye and face. This copy is inscribed on the half title to Frank Goodman, 'one of the last of the old-time Broadway press agents, a star handler and headline hustler' (New York Times). The drawing and inscription are on the half title. The inscription, which is bordered by and incorporates the drawing, reads 'For Mr. Frank Goodman Man Ray April 2, 1963'. The floating eye is above Ray's signature, and the nose and mouth extend beneath the inscription. CONDITION: Nice copy in the original black cloth in gilt and copper, in first issue jacket complete with $7.95 price (slight surface wear to jacket with wrinkle at top; book has been recased with new endpapers; some light staining to top and bottom edges of text). "The series was printed using the original plates for the portfolio LA MELODIE ACIDE, published in January 1980....The present edition consists of 1,500 prints on Arches paper of the 14 original plates, numbered from 1/1,500 to 1,500/1,500, and with the artist's signature on each of the plates."
This set is INCOMPLETE with 12 of the 14 plates. Plates measure 13 x 10 inches and are in excellent condition. Exterior paperboard portfolio is heavily torn at the flap and lightly soiled overall.

Tampere, Finland: Tampere Art Museum, 1986. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Near Fine. First Printing. An incredibly rare item of Moomins memorabilia. In 1986 Tove Jansson and her life-partner, the artist Tuulikki Pietilä, donated a huge collection of Moomins-related artwork to Tampere Art Museum, Finland. The collection comprised over 1000 drawings and paintings and 38 three-dimensional tableaux. The collection was first displayed in The Moomins exhibition at Tampere Art Museum along with other original sketches and book illustrations by Jansson. The tableaux were miniature Moomin-themed dioramas crafted by Jansson, Tuulikki Pietilä and their friend, Pentti Eistola. The donation also comprised other works of art by Jansson as well as archival Moomins-related material. An exhibition catalogue was, of course, published to mark the occasion and we are pleased to be able to offer for sale a particularly significant example. Superb set of the first six volumes (of 12) of Friedrich Bertuch's famous Picture-book for Children, an illustrated encyclopedia for children.
Volumes 1 and 2 in half leather, volumes 3 to 6 in original paper wraps.
With all 600 hand-coloured copperplates in near fine condition with superb hand colour.
Text in German and French.
The Picture-Book was published in 12 volumes from 1790 to 1843 and eventually included 1,185 handcoloured copperplates. Bertuch wished to reproduce the magic of discovery, and mixed engravings of plants, animals, shells, minerals, volcanoes and technical inventions in a utopian chaos, so that a child could encounter afresh the wonders of the natural world at the turn of every page.
Although unsigned, the copperplates were overseen by Georg Melchior Kraus and J.H. Lips, after drawings by Th. Götz, C. Graf, C. Horny, Fr. Kaiser, and W. Very good copy of this rare suite of fashion plates by the prolific Louis-Marie Lanté
With 39 (of 47) hand-coloured fashion plates showing the elegant costumes of Parisian female workers and tradeswomen of the 1820s
No title page or text as usual.
It's likely that Lanté drew these women in the streets and stores of Paris as they went about their work. A student dancer strikes a pose, a presser irons lace cloth on a table, an art student carries a box of oil paints, and a sutler to the National Guard offers a dram. There is a maid, laundrywoman, chambermaid, servant and nanny. There are many modistes: a fashionable embroiderer, knitter, seamstress, straw-hat maker, dressmaker, milliner, cobbler, hair braider, cosmetic seller and a shopgirl. There are also many itinerant tradeswomen including a florist, crockery seller, oyster shucker, haberdasher, dairywoman and plaisir (sweet) seller offering their wares.

Complete with all 100 fine fashion plates of the women of Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Franconia, Kingdom of Naples, etc.
First edition in a contemporary binding by A.-F. David of Courtrai (Kortrijk, West Flanders).
Most plates signed by Lanté and engraver Gatine, a few unsigned credited to Horace Vernet.
Explanatory text by Pierre de la Mésangère, editor of the long-running Parisian fashion magazine Journal des Dames.
A fascinating collection of European fashion plates including pretty servant girls, milkmaids, cooks, chambermaids and fisherwomen, ladies and peasants, fruit sellers and florists. Many in bonnets and aprons, carrying baskets and other tools of their trades, many dressed in their finest clothes or festival costumes. The Spanish plates are particularly fine, with ladies in lace mantilla veils from Madrid, bolero or fandango dancers from Seville, a lady in mourning from Majorca, etc.

One of only 25 copies published in folio size with hand-coloured etchings on papier de Hollande
According to the publisher's catalog, this edition comprised "200 exemplaires sur papier de Hollande au format in-folio, dont 25 avec les planches coloriées."
The etchings by A. Guillaumot Fils (Auguste Etienne Guillaumot Jr.) were made from theatrical costume designs by Eugene Lacoste and Draner for productions of the comic opera Les Merveilleuses (The Lady Dandies) (1873) by Sardou. The costumes were based on contemporary prints from the Revolutionary era.
Second edition with 30 plates plus portrait, following the first with only 20 plates in 1874. The Merveilleuses is set in Revolutionary France during the period of the Directoire, 1789-1804, where Royalist Parisian society is led by the Incroyables and Muscadins, ridiculous fops and dandies, and Merveilleuses, outrageous women wearing classical Roman- and Greek-inspired robes in see-through fabrics.
