Lettered wrappers, portfolio of plates mounted in folders, cloth clamshell with 2 bone clasps, papered box. Text is in Japanese. A beautifully presented collection of masks used in the classical Japanese dance-drama Noh. Each plate, photographed by Naomi Maki, is mounted in an individual folder with tissue guard, housed in a portfolio case, and includes an index sheet. An accompanying explanatory volume written by Yasuo Nakamura goes into detail on the subject, as well as containing black and white photographs of the reverse sides of the masks. The portfolio and accompanying volume are housed inside of another cloth clamshell with two bone clasps, which in turn is housed in another box. Yasuo Nakamura (1919-1996) was a Japanese high school teacher, junior college professor, and Noh scholar, producing numerous works on the subject from the 1960s until his death. The 1884 Australian reprint of one of the seminal works of medicine, Edward Jenner's pioneering work on the creation of the smallpox vaccine, the world's first vaccine. Published in the wake of Sydney's 1881 smallpox outbreak as part of a renewed push in what was a long and unsuccessful campaign by New South Wales medical practitioners for mandatory vaccination, when by 1860, Queensland and New South Wales were the only Australian colonies not to have enacted such legislation. Possibly an illustrated encyclopaedia of an alternate universe, Serafini has alluded that it is perhaps all just the thoughts of a cat passed through his hand. The Codex is written in an imaginary language and illustrated phantasmagorically throughout. This being the true first edition published in 2 volumes by Italian art publisher Franco Maria Ricci. Full vellum, manuscript lettering, housed in a custom quarter leather clamshell. Text is in Latin. The Second Isingrin Edition with commentary and woodcut maps by Sebastian Munster. A significant work of geography containing "the earliest representation of the north-west coast of America on a printed map" (Burden), as well as one of the earliest printed works to with a map showing Asia as a whole. Some splitting to the upper joint though still firm. A small rub to the lower board. Early owner's marks to the title page and with minor occasional marginalia.
