Gibbs' scarce English version of Osorio's important history of Portuguese exploration, featuring Vasco da Gama, Magellan, Cabral, Albuquerque, and others. Osorio was well-regarded in his day as a stylist of Latin, earning the sobriquet 'the Portuguese Cicero'. First edition in English. Two volumes bound in period brown calf, red leather labels. Phoenix, AZ: Art Consultants, Ltd., 1972. R. C. (Rudolph Carl) Gorman, (1931-2005) was born in Chinle, AZ, on the Navajo reservation. The son of Carl Gorman, a noted Navajo painter, R. C. Gorman was one of the first Native American artists to receive widespread recognition. A painter, sculptor, and lithographer, he was best known for his powerful images of Navajo women. Working with the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, he created this suite of 5 lithographs, titled 'Homage to Navajo Women', in 1972. The edition was limited to 70 impressions, with each print in this set numbered 7/70. They are printed on Arches buff, deckle edged paper, and measure 22 x 30". Each lithograph is signed by the artist on the lower left. The titles of the prints are: 'Young Navajo Woman', 'Corn Mother', 'Walking Women', 'Mother & Child', and 'Noon Meditation'. Unpublished, 1890. Original ink/watercolor drawing by the preeminent illustrator of children of the late nineteenth century. Undated, circa 1880-1900. Depicted are two young girls, backs to us, seated in a meadow amid spindly wildflowers. Each wears a fur-trimmed shawl or frock; the one on the left her spring hat & lilac frock, the one on the right in a bonnet matching her sky-blue frock; initialed in the lower left corner, undated. Image size about 2-3/8 by 1-3/4 inches (6 x 4.5 cm) on somewhat larger paper, which is tanned but unfoxed. As found, in an early twentieth-century mat & frame (though clearly recently re-wired), non-archival, backed with wood; featuring the artist's name neatly written on the mat. Charming & unique! . Edinburgh: James Boswell; Printed by James Donaldson, for Alexander Donaldson, 1774. First edition (second state, Pottle 50) of this important legal decision, affecting copyright law in the United Kingdom and later the United States; breaking publishers' and large bookshops' perpetual copyright monopoly. Has "shops" on the title page, various alterations in the text. Laid in is a bound photocopy of the relevant pages from Pottle, describing the editions and states, comments on the case and its publication. Issued unbound, ours has been recently bound in black leather over grey cloth boards with red leather spine labels - not decorative, but neat & servicable. The edges of the title page and last leaf have been reinforced; there is light chipping and a tear or two to other page edges, and minor pencil marginal brackets. [1], blank, iv, 37, blank pages.. Rochester, NY: Stecher, Brunswick, 1900. Rare nurserymen's sample book, with 121 color plates of fruit, flowers, & trees. Folds up, with leather covered outer boards; the images are connected with cloth tapes to flip in groups of three, displaying six at a time, so the salesman could dazzle his customers with quick flashes of color. 73 of the images are chromolithographs, mostly by Stecher, with a few by M. Brunswick & Co., both of Rochester, New York; 45 are stencil (pochoir) prints by M. Brunswick (only one is marked 'hand-painted', though most of the process for all of them was done by hand); there are two color halftones and one color wood engraving, unattributed. The Brunswick chromolithos tend to be less sophisticated than the Stechers. Each plate has a brief description of the fruit or plant pictured. Each plate is about 5½" by 8¾". Trumbo's first book, in the 'Socialist Realism' style, of a self-made small-town businessman whose character is insufficient to sustain his ego; controversial in Trumbo's hometown for unflatteringly cutting a little too close to their lives. First edition (first printing); the book was not reprinted until 2005, the centennial of the author's birth. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured. Book shows some edgewear & darkening, minor chipping/fraying; jacket darkened, rubbed, & chipped with minor staining & creasing, a few short tears, 7s. 6d. price remaining; ink name & note inside front cover, pages lightly tanned with a few minor stains. Kokusho-Kankohkai, 1984. Ten volumes only (of eleven - the last volume was, we are told, published the year after this set was acquired) of the Works of H. P. Lovecraft, here published as a set for the first time in Japanese, from S. T. Joshi's 'corrected' editions of 1984. Hardcovers in slipcases, as pictured. Most have the paper band or 'obi strip', though some are torn or incomplete. Books show light wear, most are really 'near fine', but a few with bumped corners; slipcases worn & rubbed, that of volume 6 is torn & taped. Texts appear unread. Great Salt Lake City: Elias Smith, 1862. Two nearly complete bound volumes of the venerable Salt Lake City paper, 104 issues in all: Volume XII, Nos. 1 - 52, July 2, 1862 to June 24, 1863 and Volume XIII, Nos. 1-52; July 1, 1863 to September 21, 1864. By this time, the paper had settled in Salt Lake City after the 'Utah War', news was arriving by telegraph, and the paper was issued regularly, except when paper shortages or other unexplained problems caused brief interruptions, as when No. 22, December 16, 1863 jumps to No. 23, March 2, 1864. Scarce original documentation of LDS history & commentary, including local, national, and international news, disasters, agricultural ideas, human interest stories, Presidential addresses, Civil War accounts, local ads, correspondence, LDS notes & lectures. New York: Sign o' the Lanthorn, 1898. Collection of short stories & poems by members of a New York literary club, of whom the best-remembered are the young Stephen Crane and his some-time publisher, Irving Bacheller. The group met regularly to hear each other's writings, of which, according to Wertheim's Stephen Crane Encyclopedia (quoting Bacheller), "Only negative criticism was permitted, and "the highest tribute that a story could receive was complete silence."" This book is apparently the club's only publication, and about half of it is Crane's short story 'The Wise Men', of a foot race in Mexico, also published that year in his collection 'The Open Boat'; (BAL II, p. 337). Number 61 of the edition of 125, this SIGNED by Crane after his contribution, as are five of the other six pieces included, all except that of Hawkins, purporting to reproduce a poem by a six-year-old (with 'klecksograph' illustrations reminiscent of Rorschach… Leer más

Accokeek, MD: Sun-Stone: The Private Press of Lenore Thomas, 1969. Poem on the creative process & spirituality of a sculptor. Born in Chicago in 1909, Lenore Thomas, though she studied at the Chicago Art Institute, was a largely self-taught sculptor, creating large-scale public works for New Deal programs. Living in Maryland in the 1940s, she married Robert Ware Straus; both were involved in social justice issues and Lenore was investigated by HUAC in the 1950s. Later she moved to Maine, where she taught, continued to sculpt, and became active with a zen community until her death in 1988. This, her second book, was made entirely by the artist (except the binding), including two copper-plate engravings printed with hand-set type, fifteen engravings reproduced as half-tones overprinted with color woodblocks and a tipped-in half-tone plate of a sculpture she erected in the Lofoten Islands of Norway in 1967. Milan: P. e G. Vallardi, 1835. 35 copperplate prints bound in a hardcover folder, cover detached. Published by the Vallardi brothers of Milan, undated, but about 1835. The Vallardis continued the business founded in 1750 by their father, offering maps and prints, with Guiseppe carrying on after Pietro's death in 1819; the firm was renamed Antonio Vallardi around 1920 and continues, as part of a conglomerate, to produce guide & reference books. Some of the images are remakes, sometimes reversed, of prints engraved by Peregrinus de Colle and Francesco Pedro, many from paintings by Venetian painter Francesco Maggiotto (1738-1805) (mostly cited on the prints as Maiotto or Magiotto), originally published by Cavalli of Venice some 30-40 years earlier.
