Toronto: Ryerson 1942, 1st Canadian Edition. (Hardcover) 396pp. Very good, no dust jacket. Blue cloth with yellow titles. Light wear at the tips of the corners and the top and bottom ends of the spine, a previous owner's inscription on the front endpaper, some stains on a few pages and edges, the untrimmed fore-edges show wear, a few pages have dog-ear creases, and on close inspection one can see that the back inner hinge has been repaired from the inside. In a mylar jacket. (Fiction, Canadian, Juvenile).

INSCRIBED, SIGNED and dated 1946 by Carl Rungius on the blank FFEP and SIGNED by Schaldach, the author, on the same page. Copies signed by Rungius are very uncommon. Very good condition with slight fraying spine ends, usual light browning of pages, very tips lower corners rubbed, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages other than the signed inscription and author signature. Original slipcase has 1cm deep loss of cover paper at spine ends, complete cover labels (front and back) that are not chipped, some splitting along one spine edge but connections holding well. Recently bound in period-style red half-morocco over paper-covered boards, with raised bands and gilt title-labels to spines. Edges toned and uncut (indeed the signatures are in the greater part unopened). Some mild intermittent foxing and staining to text in the main two volumes, with heavier staining and old (1823) owner's name to title-page in the General Introduction volume, but in all very bright and near fine. Otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Very neat -- a sound and very handsome set. Large folding map in Volume I well-preserved and bright with just a short closed tear (1 cm.) near stub. Second and preferred edition, with folding map. 25.5 cm, 283 pp. in original pictorial cloth boards, beautifully illustrated with 25 full-page photogravures and many additional illustrations in the text. Boards are lightly spotted, but still quite attractive; internally clean and sound. The topographical map, titled "Map of the Lake Louise Region Showing Part of the Summit Range of the Canadian Rocky Mountains" is laid in at the front and is in fine condition. The author was an early explorer of the Canadian Rockies who made several first ascents, including Temple, Aberdeen, Niblock, and Indefatigable. In a 1941 article in the American Alpine Journal, climber J. Henry Scattergood described the book as "delightful," praising Wilcox's "exquisite descriptions of Lake Louise, Valley of the Ten Peaks (then called by him Desolation Valley) and neighborhood."
