A collection of 8 folio broadsides and title page ranging in size from 13" x 17" to 13" x 19" and printed on heavy paper of various colors with all but two of the broadsides illustrated and each individually SIGNED by the author. This is Copy "F" of 26 lettered copies of a total edition of 126. Contributors are John Updike ("Two Sonnets"), Allen Ginsberg ("Capitol Air" - - Ginsberg has also made a single word holograph correction to the text), Linda Pastan ("Mother Eve"), Howard Nemerov ("Landscape with Self-Portrait"), Heather McHugh ("From 20,000 Feet"), William Stafford ("Geography Lesson"), William Heyen ("Mother and Son"), and Scott Davison ("Soft Salvation"). Prov. R. I. [ Providence, Rhode Island ]: Henry L. Tillinghast, 1855. First Edition. Near Fine. First Edition. Broadside. Single leaf, printed on recto only. 9 x 6 1/4 inches. Wove paper with no watermarks. Cleanly trimmed (with minor variation on upper edge). A nice impression noting some ink ghosting (presumably from other copies printed at the same time). Signed in type "J. A. Foster" at base of leaf. Intended for brief use in a town or village, these broadsides had a low survival rate. The photographer would pin them up or circulate in the village they were in, drumming up whatever business they could with this new wonder. Once they left, there was no use for the advertisement anymore. Traveling photographers left fewer traces of their businesses - even semi-permanent establishments could put advertisements on their photographs, in local papers, etc. The itinerant photographer was just that - moving around constantly. San Francisco, CA: Published by Henry Payot, 184, Washington Street, 1867. broadside. oblong folio. broadside. wood engraving 5-5/16 x 19-1/4, printed across a double sheet measuring 7-7/8 x 21-3/16, blue wove paper. Panoramic view looking east down Sacramento Street from Nob Hill, with several Chinese at left; Telegraph Hill at left in distance. Probably made from a photograph; several misunderstandings as a result. (This was used for Baird 317; one copy of Baird 235 at California Historical Society has date of January 12, 1867, suggesting that the 1860 date on Baird 317 may not be actual date of publication.) See also Baird 236. Some staining throughout, but mostly to the edges. Overall a lovely copy of an incredibly rare piece. Copy at UC Berkeley.

Etched playing board with rules of the game in lower margin of the sheet and publisher's number 221. Sheet-size 407 x 335 mm. Very rare and beautifully illustrated etched sheet for dice game; the centre field of the playing board depicts an outdoor scene with a dressage show of monkeys in various costumes with spectators behind wooden bars, in the corners more or less anthropomorphic images of four species of monkeys. 14 of the 30 fields showing monkeys in various costumes doing acrobatic stunts, and if you enter one of these fields you have to according to the rules restart from the beginning or pay a penalty. - Georg Nikolaus Renner (1803-1854) was an art dealer and publisher in Nuremberg since 1826. From 1837 Friedrich Schuster became his partner, from then on the company was called "Renner & Co" – therefore the present game must have been published before. An almost perfect copy of a finely illustrated example of a monkey theatre dice game, a subject which became very popular in the 19th century.

Two hand coloured lithographed broadsides by Lemercier after Victor Adam (1801-1866) and Louis Stanislas Marin-Lavigne (1797-1860) heightened with gum Arabic, each with a large central image showing Napoléon on horseback one dated 1800 the other 1815, each framed by 20 further images which relate important steps in his military and political career giving a full account of his reign closing with a view of his tomb on the island of St. Helena. Large folio (660 x 500 mm). Mounted and framed within modern white cardboard passepartouts. Light foxing, in margins else fine. Two spectacular large size lithographs in beautiful contemporary hand colouring, celebrating Napoleon's life and accomplishments. Many of the small images depict battle scenes others with important political events. Lower margins of each sheet with variant hand coloured allegorical vignette, one showing a heraldic eagle the other the Code Napoléon. Well margined copies.

Large engraved and folded broadsheet (585 x 468 mm) with a beautifull interior view of a billiard hall with a lavishly decorated billiard table with 6 male billiard players, ca 224 x 470 mm, in the upper half of the sheet, designed and engraved by Daniel, graveur du roi. Lower part of the sheet with text in 6 columns, centre fold marked by a billiard cue, adorned with four richly decorated medals in the corners of the text. - Bound with: Chéreau, Charles. Impressively large and very rare French broadside table providing a detailed overview of the statistics on population, geography and economy of the 57 départemens of France for the year 1824. It does so in an extremely structured manner. Of each administrative region the precise geographic and topographic values are given, after which the specialization in natural or industrial productivity of these regions is described. For example, the département Calvados has "excellent horses, bestieux fat, grains, cider, cider brandy, flax, hemp" etc. etc. According to a contemporary review in Revue encyclopédique (1825), this table was considered especially useful to understand the importance of each of the départements, and… Leer más

Single leaf (270 x 212 mm) with copper-engraved plate (198 x 147 mm); very lightly foxed, 2 small paper flaws (of which the larger 8 mm), but overall a very good copy.
Very rare engraved broadside advertisement for a Venetian chocolatier. An attractive print, the advertisement offers 'chioccolatta d'ogni sorte' for a variety of prices, beneath an internal view of Guado's premises in Calle Larga in San Marco. Set within an ornamental rococo frame with the shop's 'la nave' sign depicted above, the scene shows a wealthy clientele in a spacious chocolate-house, drinking hot chocolate, with beans being ground in the foreground.
OCLC shows no copies of the engraving. The original copper plate survives in the Civica Raccolta delle Stampe Achille Bertarelli, in Milan.

Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania: Emerson, Smith & Co.. Very Good. Broadside. Broadside printed on Japanese paper and dated to the late 19th century. Broadside has rough edges and was folded multiple times. Broadside has many creases likely due to the statement printed in the upper left corner: "This is genuine Japanese paper. Press the sheet up into a ball, then straighten it out, and you will observe that it possesses remarkable properties, and a careful examination will interest you." Broadside has light toning, overall very good. Also included is a 8" x 10 ½" ordering form that has heavy toning and has been folded multiple times. This broadside promotes the double cross-cut narrow blade saw which was patented in 1883 by Emerson, Smith & Co., saw manufacturers. The broadside is likely dated to around 1887 as the proprietors note their 1887 hand book for saw prices. Louisville, KY: Courier-Journal Job Printing Company , 1903. Broadside poster printed in black type of different sizes, 28" h x 10 1/4" wide, 6 horizontal folds, Very Good, two 1" tears at right edge, soiling at verso of bottom folded section. The printed admission price of 25 and 35c has been marked out in black ink with a reduced price of 10 - 15c written in. A broadside for the itinerant showman Samuel Gillock, Exhibitor. "Given under the Auspices and for the Benefit of The Choir At Centenary M. E. Church Friday Evening March 20". Likely the Centenary M. E. Church in downtown New Albany, Indiana, located across the river from Louisville where the broadside was printed. No year date, but Edison invented the concert phonograph in 1899, producing newer versions until 1906, and the first Friday, March 20 following 1899 was in 1903. "In the largest churches or halls. Repaired horizontal and vertical closed tears on blank verso; several small holes have slight effect on several letters. Light toning. Good+ copy of a rare, dramatic broadside. "As we soon expect to have official documents in relation to the SIX MILITIA MEN, arrested, tried, and put to death, under the orders of General Andrew Jackson, this may not be an improper time to give to the public some of the particulars of the execution..." The source of those "particulars" is the account in John Binns's 'Democratic Press.' The primary weapon of the anti-Jackson forces was his alleged impetuous, unrestrained, martial personality, utterly unsuitable for the presidency of a democratic republic whose success required respect for constitutional checks and balances. San Francisco: Walter N. Brunt Press, 1918. 14" h x 10 1/2" w World War One broadside printed on newsprint by Walter N. Brunt Press, 880 Mission St., S.F. No year given, but (1918). Very Good, small edge tears and chips, light creasing. Billed as the "Greatest Open Air Concert Ever Held in America" with "17,000 Good Seats". Presented "under the auspices of War Camp Community Service Commission and Leland Stanford University", The "Proceeds to be devoted to the development of the recreational facilities of the men at Camp Fremont and to sending the fifteen women graduates of Stanford University to France for War Service".
