Completely clean inside, but for a short neat collector name to the front endpaper, dating information added in pencil to some plates. Text in Japanese. Table of contents and plate list in English. Classic study of the cave temples and murals of Ajanta. Photographs by Mikihiro Taeda. 179 photographs in color and black & white. 13" high X 11" wide. Tokyo: Imperial Government Railways.. (circa1910).. 50 delicate hand coloured collotype plates on high quality stiff card each captioned in English, presented in Japanese embroidered silk covered boards with tassle ties, All edges gilt., patterned gilt endpapers.The hinges of each image have been professionally repaired with Japanese paper and wheat starch paste. Neat pencilled annotations lower corners, leaves clean and bright. 26 x 38cm. This beautiful album proved very popular and was reprinted a number of times, in some editions all of the plates are in colour, as is the case with this copy, and at other times the edition only shows some plates in colour and while the others are in black and white. The work also appears in editions both with and without 2 maps, later editions in Western bindings. Although his name does not appear in this album it seems highly likely that this album was published by Ogawa Kazumasa (1860-1929). The plastic holders for the postcards on pg. 17-23 are coming slightly unglued. No markings on the inside of the book. Photos are of the book we have here at Barbed Wire Books.

No publication details.. (circa1920?).. Album of twelve full page hand coloured illustrations on silk laid down on card leaves. Images measure 25.4 x 19.4cm. Silk along upper border of two images a trifle frayed, occasional light marks, some light browning card leaves, minor insect damage silk border of one leaf not affecting image. Bound in between wooden boards, title label blank. Chinese ownership marks endpaper. Modern professional Japanese paper repairs to spine. Very attractive album. A charming collection of Chinese pictures showing a variety of domestic, court and mythological scenes. This album contains no clues as to the purpose of these delightful images. There is no title or accompanying text and they are as is typical of these types of illustrations unsigned. They may have been produced for the tourist trade or maybe as a gift book? .

Original plastic dust cover lightly rubbed with some pitting and scoring. Former owners' names and date written in blue ink on copyright page (in position of title page, due to reverse Chinese format). "#104" in marker and scar of sticker removal on Chinese copyright page (verso of "front" wrap). Else, no internal markings.

Beijing: Rong Bao Zhai, 1952. This is a faithful reproduction of the seventeenth century edition, made from re-cut blocks and even incorporating the blind-stamping technique of gauffrage (gonghua - embossed design). The original was first published in 1633. This edition was published in 1952 by the historian Zheng Zhenduo and the author Lu Xun. Complete work in 4 volumes with over 280 images. Wonderful woodblock prints and gonghua embossing on Xuan paper. Chinese text. In its original silk tapestry folding outer case, held together by bone clasps. Four soft back books in sandstone-coloured paper binding with gold flecks. The books and case are all in very good condition. One label has a tiny tear, and there is some very minor light spotting to a few pages. The label and silk to the outer shows minimal handling. 315 x 210 mm (12½ x 8¼ inches).
