Detroit, MI: Detroit Photographic Co, 1898. two mounted photographs on thick card paper. 6.75 inches by 9 inches. two mounted photographs on thick card paper. Pair of photochrom photographs. Both photographs are in near fine condition with only the slightest hint of chipping along the edge of the photograph featuring the iconic Yosemite Valley, General View. The photochrom is a color photo lithograph created from a black and white photographic negative. Color impressions are achieved through the application of multiple lithograph stones, one per color. The process was developed in Switzerland and brought to the United States by the Detroit Publishing Company in 1897, which acquired exclusive ownership and rights to the process in America. Anticipating the success of the photochrom for the mass production of color prints, the Detroit Publishing Company recruited William Henry Jackson to become a partner. Paris: A. Maurice, 1878. Fine. A. Maurice, Paris 1878, 10,6x16,4cm, une photographie. - Grande photographie originale sur papier albuminé, au format carte de cabinet, contrecollée sur un carton fort. Publicité du photographe au dos. Rare photographie de Victor Hugo dans sa maison de Hauteville, dans le fameux salon rouge Renaissance, la pièce préférée de l'écrivain, entièrement conçue par lui. On y voit l'écrivain assis, la main droite dans son gilet. De la pièce on peut voir le grand lustre à gaz, 4 sculptures porte-torchères et un miroir dans le fond. Au début de l'été 1878, Victor Hugo fait une attaque d'apoplexie à Paris et rejoint Hauteville pour sa convalescence durant les mois d'été. Le photographe André prendra alors de lui plusieurs clichés à Hauteville ; l'intérêt de ces photographies est qu'elles ne sont pas des photographies de studio. Lemercier) showing Max and Maurice.Contemporary calf backed marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt. An extra-illustrated volume with 22 engravings, lithographs, half-tones and especially important 9 mounted original photographs by an unknown photographer showing the two orangoutans (living and as stuffed animals) with their zookeeper, their taxidermist (?) and with an exotic looking young male. It must have been a fascinating entertainment for the Parisian public and it is said that they attracted more than 100.000 visitors in 1893. They were imported from Borneo and travelled throughout Europe, public viewing was possible in Antwerp, Bruxelles and Paris. Within a year they died from stress and pneumonia. This portrait, which has remained famous in the writer's iconography, shows Dostoevsky with a piercing gaze and a slight smile.

Matted and framed, 19 x 17 inches, in fine condition. Provenance: From the estate of Addie Wyatt, who appears in an Associated Press photograph by Nam Huh with the print.

The Reverends Addie and Claude Wyatt, Jr. were fixtures of the American Civil Rights movement through the second half of the 20th century.
Addie began her career working with the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America in Chicago in 1941. Together they founded Chicago’s Vernon Park Church of God in 1956, and for the next twelve years were closely associated with Dr. Martin Luther King’s peace movement, joining him at the March on Washington in 1963, the Selma to Montgomery Marches in 1965, and the Chicago demonstration in 1966.

Wear to edges, binding pulling from spine but all pages holding tight. Marbled endpapers. Leaves show light foxing to edges plus definite wear from use. Most pages are linen backed with photo images securely mounted to either album leaf or thinner note paper bound in. Images generally are 4 1/2" x 7 1/2". Album contains 145 photographs plus several pages tipped in from printed trade catalogs. In addition, 6 pages of ledger sheets are tipped in at back of album. This remarkable in-house catalog contains photographs of shot guns, pistols, and revolvers which Manufacture Liegeoise produced for hunting, military and personal use. Pacific Theater, World War II: Self-published, 1943. A superb World War II archive featuring a significant manuscript photograph album (oblong 17" x 12") containing 147 photographs on 46 pages (17 pages blank at rear), service records, citations, orders, medals, patches, bars, newspaper clippings, ID card, dog tags, and additional loose photographs and negatives, all belonging to Edwin Oscar Ahbe (1916-1995) . Ahbe was inducted on Dec. 1, 1943, reporting to Camp Peekskill, NY and serving as a Cameraman Motion Picture 043 and Combat Photographer in the 3374th Signal Photographic Service Company. After stops at Fort Sheridan and Camps Smith and Crowder, his first overseas photographs in the album begin in Ceylon. A small manuscript list shows he left NY early on Oct. 20, 1944 and records him being in Newfoundland, Azores, Cashblanca (sic), Tripoli, Cairo, Aboudan Iran, Karachi India, Kandy Ceylon, Burma, and China. Oblong 4to. 11.5 x 8.25 in. 57 linen-backed silver gelatin photographs, nearly all w/ typed captions on versos, linen hinges & stubs at gutter margin, bound w/ two brass screw-posts at gutter margin, recent flexible mylar cover as protection secured w/ screw-posts (slight curling at fore-edges), still all photos w/ bright strong contrast. This remarkable series of undocumented photographs visually produces the efforts of Metropolitan Edison to further expand their footprint in the Pennsylvania market after electrifying over 35,000 customers by 1925. As they accelerated their push to introduce additional electrical appliances following World War I, they sponsored trade shows and expositions to advertise the latest available products, and even commissioned their employees to regularly make house calls after hours with electrical toasters, and lamps with prizes awarded for the most sales. [San Francisco]: [Probably Taber Photo], 1880. Ephemera. Near fine. An imperial plate (8-1/2 by 12-1/2 inches) image of the El Capitan, one of the best-known rock formations in the Yosemite Valley. Watkins made at least five mammoth-plate images from this vantage point over a period of at least 20 years. Watkins took this image between 1878 and 1881. It may have been printed by Isaiah Taber, after Taber took over Watkins's bankrupt photo studio. However, it does not have the Taber imprint but the mount matches another Yosemite image with Taber's logo in the negative. This view is very similar to one of Watkins's mammoth-plate images (Naef and Hult-Lewis, Carleton Watkins: The Complete Mammoth Photographs, no. 136) and was almost certainly taken at the same time. It is easily distinguishable from images taken at another time because this image and the corresponding mammoth-plate view have a white reflection of the mountain in the water in the foreground. Collection of 29 original photographs, ( two - 8 3/4" x 6" and 27- 6 1/4" x 4 1/2") applied on 15 thick card leaves, titles written in white ink directly under photos, one blank leaf each front and back. The photographs detailing the construction of the Umberto I Bridge over the Po River at Turin, 1903-1907 ( the bridge was completed with the addition of the statue groups by Rubino and Reduzzi in 1911). Bound in oblong leather folio, 13" h x 16 1/2" w, with presentation in gilt front cover -"Al Marchese Francesco Medici Deputato al Parlamento" - followed by title and publisher in gilt. front cover with gilt decorations, ornate 1" wide gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt. Very Good Minus, missing 2/3 of the leather at spine, boards rubbed, soiling and staining to end pages, the leaves darkened at edges, the photographs all in Very Good condition with some rubbing.
