The 87 plates of bovine animals are arranged by origin, each region with its own part-title: England, Holland and Denmark, Switzerland and Germany, (the empire of) Austria, and France. Many of the excellent plates are after photographs by Adrien Nadar. Artists like Emile van Marcke, Isodore Bonheur and Barye contributed to this work. The lithographic illustrations in the present Dutch translation are after the original uncoloured English engravings, but in the present copy they are carefully hand-coloured.The translator, Evert Cornelis Enklaar (1799-1880), was an authority on Dutch agriculture in his time. He was the author of the influential Dutch agricultural manual Handboek voor den beoefenaar van den landbouw (1854) and many other works on the same subject. London: Groombridge & Sons Ten volumes (of 12 published), small thick octavo, all edges gilt, original cloth, with a full complement of 64 colour printed plates and 55 tinted plates, plus many dozens of text engravings, remarkably clean internally with just the very occasional mark or small stain. The cloth bindings are original, but changed in colour and style during the course of publication and are slightly worn overall; the first five volumes are faded and bleached, the upper cover of Volume XI is stained, the spines of the last five volumes are wrinkled, and Volume VII is slightly weak at the front and rear hinges; Volumes I & IV are cracked at the front and rear hinges. Despite any faults mentioned, I feel that the internal condition is exceptional, as is the size of this run - an almost complete set - which is very unusual. VERY SCARCE. A superb copy rebound by Brian Cole This is a lovely well produced rendition of the work that made Thomas Bewick. A General History of Quadrupeds appeared in 1790. It deals with 260 mammals from across the world, including animals from "Adive" to "Zorilla". It is particularly thorough on some of the domestic animals: the first entry describes the horse. Beilby and Bewick had difficulty deciding what to include, and especially on how to organise the entries. They had hoped to arrange the animals systematically, but they found that the rival systems of Linnaeus, Buffon and John Ray conflicted, and in Linnaeus's case at least changed with every edition of his work. Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) was an English wood engraver and natural history author. He is much admired today for the quality of his wood engravings and is usually considered as the founder of wood engravings. This book contains many examples of such wood engraving.
This History is comprehensive dealing with 260 mammals from across the world and is particularly thorough on domestic animals.
Binding very good. Later half calf green morocco over marbled boards with morocco label on spine. Raised bands on spine with gilt tooling and lettering.Light wear with a little scuffing to leather, mainly one corner. Spine lightly sunned.
Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Text block good. Some damp staining mainly leaves 1 to 20 (not greatly significant) and occasional finger marks. Discreet repair to page 5 which had a tear. In general, leaves are clean.
No markings except for old sale price and "first edition" in pencil on first blank.
