Dublin: George Bonham, 1785. Book. Full-Leather. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Front leather hinge split but held with binding strings with no pages missing and the text pages still tight. Rear hinge starting but mostly intact. Corners and edges of boards are quite worn but still a nice copy. The last page states -End of the First Volume- There are some old light moisture stains but all text quite legible. 464pp.

Boston Revolutionary War patriot and Arnold Arboretum contributor Benjamin Bussey's copy with his oval printed bookplate on the front pastedown, and his circular inkstamp to title page. xliv pp. + folding map + 304 pp. + xxxvi pp. + [2] pp. + [4] folding pp. + 20 pp. 8vo., mottled calf with gilt spine ornaments, rules and gilt leather spine label. Joints cracked, label and spine chipped. First blank page and following half-title detached, laid in. Occasional light foxing. Map has closed tear at joint with no loss, and moderate foxing. Bussey, in addition to having served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War, was a merchant, farmer and horticulturist; his Forest Hills estate was eventually made part of Harvard's Arnold Arboretum.

Giovanni Battista Rinuccini was a 17th-century Italian archbishop who is best known for his diplomatic representation to Ireland and Scotland during the Irish Confederate Wars. It was during his time in the British Isles that he gained an understanding of Scotland, which helped him write his most famous book 'The Scottish Friar. This book is a tale of the life and ecclesiastical history of George Leslie, a Scottish monk.

James MacGeoghegan was an Irish Roman Catholic priest and historian. His 'History of Ireland' was written in French and published at Parish in 1758. John Mitchel's 1868 'History of Ireland' professes to be merely a continuation of MacGeoghegan, though Mitchel is throughout much more of a partisan than MacGeoghegan.

It was one of the key events of the Irish Civil War. The act imposed death sentences on any IRA member or supporter captured with a firearm or ammunition. Longmans, Green, and Co. London. 1872 - 74. FIRST EDITION. Three volumes. 8vo. (8.8 x 5.8 inches). Previous owner armorial bookplate (Isaac Holden, politician and inventor of a wool-combing machine, who received a Baronetcy in 1893) and also ink name and address stamped to the front blank free endpapers. Some foxing to the blank endpapers otherwise a very good bright and clean set throughout. All three volumes in fine nineteenth century bindings of full tan calf. Spines with raised bands, the compartments ruled and fully decorated in gilt. Red and green labels, gilt. Boards with double gilt ruled borders. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Some minor rubbing to edges but generally a very good copy in attractive nineteenth century bindings. The bindings are unsigned but very high quality work.

With the extremely rare original colour illustrated dustwrapper. Front panel with illustration by Matthew W. Barry. Spine, which is a bit dulled, lettered in green (price 7/- net). Rear panel with publishers advert. Small (7 x 3 mm) hole to the bottom of the spine otherwise a very good bright example of the rare wrapper. A lovely copy of this powerful novel, set against the background of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin.

About this book
Michael James Whitty (1795 - 1873), newspaper editor and proprietor, native of Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, commenced his literary career in London, and among his earliest friends were Sir James Bacon and George Cruikshank. He published anonymously in 1824 two volumes of Tales of Irish Life stories which depict the customs and condition of the people of his homeland, and were a great success, being reprinted in America and also translated into French and German.
